Joan McCarville, whose struggle to get a third lung transplant was reported in the Wisconsin State Journal in February, received the transplant at UW Hospital this week.
McCarville, 44, a dairy farmer from Iowa County, was in critical condition Thursday following the surgery Wednesday morning, said her mother, Alice Gafke.

McCarville's insurance, the state's Health Insurance Risk Sharing Plan, paid for her first two lung transplants in 1997.

When her doctors said last fall that she needed a third one, the plan refused to pay. Administrators said a policy adopted in 2000 limits coverage to one transplant per organ per lifetime.

McCarville, who pays about $400 a month for the insurance, argued that she had $280,000 remaining on the plan's $1 million cap. UW Hospital said the procedure would cost about $330,000, with follow-up care possibly adding to the expense.
After the State Journal reported her story, the state Department of Health and Family Services agreed to pay $280,000 for the transplant.

A community fundraiser in Mineral Point in May raised more than $100,000, Gafke said.

McCarville, who has lived with one lung for nine years, received a single lung in the transplant this week. Dr. Robert Love performed the surgery.

Because it was McCarville's third transplant, "it was a pretty long and complex operation," said hospital spokeswoman Kathy Schultz.

Said Gafke: "It's a wait-and-see thing. ... We just want prayers from people."
