What age did your child begin the vest?

Hello all,

We are having a really difficult time doing cpt with Aidan, our active 21-month-old. We've tried getting him to watch DVDs he enjoys during treatments, singing, numerous things. It's a huge battle and wrestling match 3 times a day. When I asked about getting the vest at our last Clinic appt., the staff said that they start all patients on the vest at 3 years. In general, I've noticed that the clinic has "standard" answers for things, and don't seem to individualize treatment (i.e., "we start everyone on hypertonic saline at 2 years, etc). Anyway, I wondered if this is common, that there is just a standard age to begin certain treatments, and also, at what age kids typically get a vest.....if there is a typical age.....Thanks for the help!

They have to be a certain size, but I do know of children as young as a year who've gotten the vest. We didn't get DS' until he was 3. We didn't really have struggles with CPT since we'd done it since he was a week old; however, a friend of mine had a dreadful time as her child wasn't diagnosed until 18 months and every treatment was a battle.

IMO, tell the doctor that you'd like to to get the vest sooner if he's large enough because the struggles are preventing you from giving him a good treatment.

Even when we got the vest, I still did CPT for the early morning treatment because DS wasn't all that thrilled with the vest -- he couldn't hear his tv or dvd programs and was unable to wander around to play. Thank goodness for video games when he got older.

I think it is pretty common to standardize but it should not be that way. sometimes you have to stand up and argue with solid arguments to get them to deviate from standardised treatments. When it comes to the vest it should be relateively easy given your struggle to do CPT.

When it comes to meds it is more difficult since the doctors know medicine better than parents (hopefully). For instance, i tried to insist my dd (3 y/o) be put on hypertonic but they said that in their opinion risks of irritating little airways and introducing bugs outweighed the benefits in my dd's case (they did no standardize this time!). I had no arguments to counter that.

Hope it helps

My son just turned two when he got his vest but it wasn't easy they were very reluctant to issue one to him saying that he is too small and don't believe he needed it. We kept on making a big deal about it because he hates cpt and makes it difficult to do it. It was finally resolved when we suggested that they show different ways to do the cpt to make it easier on him knowing full well that he doesn't like hospital personel touching him because of his hospitalizations and doesn't trust them at all. I let them struggle with the cpt and that shut them up. Later that day he was fitted and tried out the vest and he enjoyed it. Sometimes you just have to be persistant. No one knows your child better then u do.
