What does your child culture?

My DD is 16 months and has cultured both Staph and H. Influenzae as well. I think she had one other bug that was also part of the "totally normal CF stuff we don't even treat unless there is a problem" variety. AFter a few months of weight and infection problems, she went on IVs and now her last culture was clear. Don't know if that's because of the IV or because it wasn't a good culture. But she seems to be doing better so I'm guessing they cleared her out, though I'm sure it will all be back and then some eventually.

Emily cultured pseudomonas at her first clinic visit...about 3 weeks after leaving the NICU. She was about 7 weeks old. We did TOBI - 28 days on and 28 days off for about 8 months...until she had 2 clear cultures in a row, and she hasn't cultured it since. She hasn't cultured anything except "normal flora and fauna" and strep usually shows up, too, in moderate or low levels.

I would guess that if your little one had psuedomonas they would know already. In my understanding, that's what they are looking for when the do the culture, so it is identifited readily. I could be wrong about that, though. Good luck!

One of my daughters (Kayla) has cultured MRSA, staph, H. influenzae, strep B, aspergillus and yeast. Currently only staph and strep B, which are not being treated.

My other one (Hannah) has cultured MRSA, staph, H. influenzae, strep B, and PA. Her most current showed nothing

Both girls started culturing the 'normal' stuff when very young. They didn't really treat them unless they were showing symptoms. We just had to up the CPT.

I was not surprised when Hannah started culturing PA really. She NEVER coughed, and had been coughing for about a month, even after taking Bactrim. So, I knew something was up. She is in the EPIC study and after two rounds of Tobi, she has had two clear cultures.

Waiting for culture results to come back drives me crazy! I start calling in about two days looking for results Of course there never are any yet, but I just can't stand the waiting, it just makes me so nervous.

Cheyenne cultures H. Influenza, Staph and Moraxcella something or other. She has been on antibiotics constantly since the first week in Jan. They have retested her once a month and every time she still has it so they change the antibiotic. If she still has something this next time they check her, June 4th, he is admitting her for one week of iv's and then home with them for one week.

Is she on the antibiotic because she was symptomatic this whole time? I thought those things were left alone unless they are causing porblems. Here's hoping she will culture clear on the 4th so you can avoid the hospital!

Melissa, she always has problems..runny/stuffy nose, increased cough, lowered O2, labored breathing, fever, decreased appetite and less energy than normal. She has had pnuemonia 36 times, so they are trying (without success) to keep it at bay.

Debbie,
I am so sorry. I hate how there is no logic or predictability to CF. I am sorry that it is affecting your daughter in such a horrible way. Thank you for your information and I hope that is not what Porter has to look forward to since he is culturing similar. I also hope very much that your daughter (and you) get some relief soon. Thanks again.

DS cultured Pseudomonas A at 3 months, came home from the nicu with enterbactor cholea -- got rid of that. Cultured hemophilus influenzae until he was about 2 when he started zithromax -- hasn't cultured it since. He's been on Tobi off and on for the pseudo.
