I'll give the short version here cause this has been going on for two months now. Aidan has had a cough that started small just in the morning and the advair seemed to help with that for about two weeks then it took on a life of its own and became a full blown cough during the day and was more then dry. so we stopped the advair in the AM and went back to giving it at end of treatment. after xopenex and vest. he also did 2 weeks of Augmentin.

after the two weeks it didnt get any better so I brought him in for check up and his cultur had come back showing he grew two bacterias. being as he was all inflammed we did five days of Prednisone and just finished 3 weeks of Cipro. this last weeks he was finally clearing up were there was no cough at all in the am or sleep or during the day. now today he wakes up with a runny stuffy nose and has the same cough as before. he sounds all inflammed again hes coughing all day and was in his sleep last night.

I'm afraid something grew off the two bacterias he already had. and now he has something new. I also think he needs Prednisone again. do they give that as a regular daily thing? or is it only monthly? I'm so scared this is the worst Aidan has ever been since hes been born. he's had colds before but weve kicked it. obviously I'm calling his doc tommorow to let her know this but I was wondering what ya'll thought.

It sounds like an exacerbation. He may need an even longer course on the cipro or to add a different synergistic abx. He may also benefit from doing IVs.

I'm sorry its been such a hard time. Alyssa has had coughs she can't kick before. It was a difficult and scary time. We even had to do a bronch while she was on IVs because even they weren't working -- we had to figure out the right meds. But eventually we got it all settled and she is doing terrifically again. So don't assume this is his new baseline. Keep being aggressive (as it definitely sounds you are) and hopefully you and your CF team will find the right course to bring him back to his baseline.

Hang in there. I'd definitely prepare yourself mentally for an admission. Our clinic admits after two oral abx don't change the situation.

thanks for the reply. i really want to get him back to his baseline. Crap, I didnt expect to hear you say prepare myself for an admission. Aidan has never been hospitalized. Would a Bronch help clear out the mucus?

WOW. We are going through the same thing right now! I am sooo happy to see this cuz we are sooo close to admission and I am scared.
My 5 year old has had a cough off/on for around 8 months ( We have tried Augmentin right off the bat. She cultured Staph about 9 months ago and shortly after developed a cough. It did go away for a bit, then has been back for at least about 5 months...not even sure anymore! So now we have been through Prednison also, while also on Cephlinex or something like that, then we switched to Cipro and have been on Cipro and Tobi for 2 1/2 weeks. She stops Cipro at 3 and finishes 28 days of Tobi. They told us after two weeks of this stuff she would need to be admitted. Then, at clinic. they said her right lower lung was crackly, did x-rays, extended the meds and started Hyper Saline 7%. That makes her cough SOOO much! It is terrible to watch, but I think it is helping. BUT she is still coughing ( We go to the ped to have her listen on Friday. If her lungs don't sound better and she is still coughing, she will be admitted.
They didn't tell me what x-rays showed...I may have to call and see, also the new cultures. She has only been culturing staph so far.
I am so worried about admission ( I am not sure how I will handle it.
Keep us posted, I am right here with you.

Oh, also, if I am not mistaken...a bronch will only allow them to see if there are other bugs that are not showing on culture and also let them see what is in the lungs.
AND now, my infant is congested and coughing! Oh my!
