ok Zoey was in the hospital from saturday to thursday. Running a high fever. They did blood work and a bunch of different things and couldnt ever figure out where the fever was coming from. Finally said it was a stomach bug. They put her on 3 antibiotics while they were waiting on test results. Wednesday she developed a horrible cough and was really congested so they prescribed her a cough suppressant / decongestant medicine called Ceron DM. Well it only seemed to make it worse so today i was sitting here reading side effects of this medicine and this is what is says: This medication can dry up and thicken mucus in your lungs making it more difficult to breathe and clear your lungs!!!!!! HELLO!!! My kid has cystic fibrosis this is the last thing she needs!!!! I am so pissed right now cause now I know why it sounded as if it was getting worse. What the hell is the matter with these people!!!!!!! Any suggestions on a cough and congestion medicine I can get for her? Sorry this was so long im just really pissed at her pediatrician right now. Sarah

They actually tell us from fairly early on that we're not supposed to take cough suppressants. I've never taken any of that stuff. Never had cold or flu medicine. Always just toughed it out. Which sucks, but they really shouldn't be giving her that stuff, you're right.

Emily is correct...we were told from the start...no cough suppressants! She needs to cough all the crud out, why would you suppress the cough? You might need to kick your pediatrician a little !!

The ONLY time I was even talked to about cough suppresants was this year and that was during a bout of hemoptysis. I was prescribed something to keep things quiet until I could get down to see my doctor. They didnt want the hemoptysis aggrivated. It knocked me on my a$$ so its probably best that I havent had it before! The decongestant is for the head or chest? If its the head a warm bath would help etc. If its for the chest.....old fashion treatments is the first thing I would recommend. Double/triple/quadruple (sp?) them if needed!

We were told very early on (like within hours of diagnosis) that we should never give a cough supressant.

Definitely find a new ped. You need one that is going to actively (i.e. always) consult with your CF dr. A "mystery" fever is certainly something that should have been brought to the attention of your CF dr. Some bugs, like Cepacia, are known for causing mystery fevers. Not trying to scare you with that just illustrating the importance of keeping your CF dr. in the loop.

Claudette makes a really good point. When people ask who my primary care physician is, I always *want* to give them the name of my CF doc, because my PCP doesn't know sh*t about me. Especially if you compare her to my CF doc.

While you still need a pediatrician, always always always consult your CF doc when things pop up with Zoey. Even a very proactive intelligent pediatrician isn't going to be on top of the CF. You have to do it for them. Sad, I know. But start by finding a new pediatrician, I would agree that's a good idea.
