Working full time with CF

I'm sorry you are having such a hard time at work. I was dx at birth so I know I most likely am coming from a different perspective and understanding. Because I can only imagine what it could be like to be my age now and have a doctor tell me that I have CF. However, as far as your job goes, a bit of advice that can string together a common bond for all of of, mild CF or not, is something my mom has told me since I began working full time and have been having awful exacerbations since the beginning.

The only person that matters pleasing is your boss. When you are at work, you need to show your boss that no one out there can do your job like you can! Make yourself a company asset that they feel they would be crazy to be without. That way, if anything, god forbid, ever goes wrong at this job, you know it was out of your own control and you know that you worked your hardest.

Good luck! I hope any of this helped!

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this and I could have written a lot of it myself! I think asking your doctor for advice is a great idea - he or someone at his office should be knowledgeable about the laws.

As far as telling coworkers about your CF - I think that's a very individual decision. I am usually very open about my CF, but it HAS burned me at work - once I explained I can't work more than 40 hours because I have CF, and I once ended up in the hospital for 2 days in the middle of the project, a manager (at my old job) didn't want to put me on a project because I was "unreliable due to having CF." So, I learned that it can burn you, and I am now more careful about who I tell at work.

Best of luck to you.

Vauw, I just found this old post that I wrote some years back. Luckily my situation has changed. I still work in the same place, but not with the same people and not the same hours. And I am now comfortable with my life, living in a foreign country and living with cf. I was really overwhelmed back then. I now work 9-5, and am home at 6.20. That hour makes a world of difference! And having more friendly understanding colleauges also has made a huge change on my outlook of life. I think I had some bad luck with my previous colleauges, fortunatly not everyone is like that. Also I cultured steno in that period, and that made me extra tired. Now that we are most likly going to try for a baby, I am thinking of asking for a reduced schedule, working half time. Or ask to work 8.30 to 16.30. We'll see. I'm just happy that my life has changed for the better :)

That's great news! Isn't it amazing how stressful work situations can really take a toll on your health? I have definitely been there. CF or not, work stress and working too much is a huge health liability.

But now I'm curious...how did you handle it? Did you ever end up telling your coworkers about your CF? I'm curious to hear how it went :)

And good luck with the possible trying for a baby!!!!

Hi, when I wrote that post I was in a different place mentally, now I'm more open about my cf. Those colleagues I did tell but I think I was not very clear and maybe underplayed it and I don't think they understood. The ones I have now I have told, and they have read about cf, and ask questions, and I tell them when I have an appointment and they'll ask me how it went. It really makes a difference. People are different. Reading my old post, makes me want to slap my old colleague, what a jerk!
