your OWN health insurance

I was wondering if anyone on here wW/ CF has their own private insurance that is NOT through work, or through a spouse. I am thinking of looking into getting my own insurance instead of worrying about state and federal help. Skye's post about medicare really has me worried I will not be able to cover everything and basically be completely finacially screwed. I don't have a hubby to rely on and I am too old to be on my mom's work insurace.

I just want to see if anyone has private insurance and if so which company do you go through and where are you located?

Thanks!!!

Hey.. I am not exactly sure how it works.. I have private insurance through a COBRA plan and also through work but, when I was looking into just taking a policy out on my own, it was really, really tough.. I think if I remember correctly, the insurance has a right to not cover any preexisisting conditions for up to one year...

So I have heard of people working for a year, using their work insurnace and still paying out of pocket for private insurance until that year was up, and then just using the private insurance..

Like I said I am not for sure, but, also, I know many insurnace companies on a private plan have the right to just say no to you..

I wonder how it works with Short term disability that goes into long term disability.. what happends with the insurnace then? I don't know.. I will look around for you and find out what I can

We got our own insurance through Assurant Health about 3 years ago when my husband got laid off. Lili had not yet been diagnosed so I don't know if you can get coverage or not. It ended up being pretty expensive for us. As a family we were paying $450 a month then there was a yearly deductible of $5300.

We just recently got insurance through my husband's company and dropped everyone except for Lili off the other plan. It may be overkill but I don't want her ever to be without insurance so as long as we can afford it we will keep it. To cover only her we are paying $106 a month with a $2600 yearly deductible.
