I looked into getting private health insurance a year and a half ago, but in every case it was automatic denial for CF as a pre-existing condition. I checked with every single insurance company that wrote in Utah - same story. I have seen a few national insurance commercials that claim they don't have any pre-exisiting condition clauses, on the one I called there was an extremely limited Dr. network and coverages. I haven't checked on any lately since I got insurance through work. Good luck!!! I think it's the Impossible Dream though.

I wasn't able to get "regular" health insurance either with cf. It's considered one of the "dread diseases" by insurance companies. I was able to get insurance through our state high risk pool. It costs $400 plus each month with a high deductible. Sucks, but at least it's there if I have to go in the hospital. Good Luck!

ditto... you are not going to be able to afford going out and "buying" your own plan... the best you can hope for getting on / staying on a plan that is provided as a result of employment, whether it is your employment or someone else ... these "group" plans will cover you regardless of your diagnosis.... when you go to purchase your own plan you are "asking" someone to cover you... with a pre-existing conditions like CF it would cost you a fortune, if they would agree to do it at all.

My friend who is self employed just tried to buy her own policy and she was denied because she is taking prozac (her mother was recently killed) the insurance company said that since depression leads to many other health ailments they didn't want to insure her.

In our current health system you will never get a policy unless you get it from employment. And a lot more jobs these days are going away from providing health coverage. Great reason to be on government assistance.....Got to love this country.
