    Obama & Healthcare

This topic has lots of good discussion that's important to all of us touched by CF. As I was reading the early posts, I had a number of points I wanted to make but found many of them have now been made. I lived under US health care - always covered by an employer plan - for the first 35 years...

    Pari neb compressor

I think you should take it back and tell them you want a proper replacement. I returned a Pari pump to the health supply store where I bought it. They offered a loaner until the replacement arrived. Pari ended up replacing the pump with a brand new one.

suggestions for a good CF center and transplant center?

Hi -- I go to the CF centre at St. Michael's hospital in Toronto. It's the second largest adult CF centre in the world and the doctors are very knowledgable across the many types of CF cases. I have unusual mutations and I found they were familiar with them. I don't know what the student...

    M abscessus

Hi - I was diagnosed with abscessus in 2008. I got very sick that year and underwent nine-months of treatment primarily by oral antibiotics. (My insurance company wouldn't cover Tygacil, which my strain seems to respond to.) That seemed to do the trick for about two years. My doctors started me...

    IV treatment

I live in Canada and have had lots of experience with IVs -- I've been on meds fore over a year now. For meds that are one or two times a day, I use a traditional approach -- IV pole, tubing, gravity. For meds that run four or more times a day, I use a pump. It's about the size of an 8-track...

    IV's & alcohol

I've been on IVs for over a year. I occasionally have one drink, at most two. In general my alcohol tolerance is low, but I've never had any problems. I didn't ask my doctor because I didn't want to be told I couldn't have a drink. :-) I am on different med's than you are.

    Diagnosed at 23

Welcome to the site. I was diagnosed at 34 with the same mutations you have. I've been told that our mutations are not fully understood by doctors and that they find us quite interesting.

    help with diagnosis

Your symptoms sound very similar to me. I show up negative in sweat tests and I was diagnosed by DNA test at 34 -- ten years ago now. I would encourage you to get a DNA test to confirm. Good luck!

    Sinus surgery?

I had two sinus surgeries - one in 1993 and one in 1997. Both were before I was diagnosed with CF and I found them both helpful for my sinus problems. The ENT got me started rinsing my sinuses each morning with salt water using an ear syringe. I have found this very helpful and my sinuses have...

    Hearing Loss

I'm going through a very similar situation for my treatment of mycobacterium abscessus. I stopped Amikacin last summer due to hearing damage in the upper register. They then put me on Tygacil, which caused other horrible side effects, so I'm back on Amikacin at a lower dose. They have talked...

    Diagnosed as an adult

I had lung issues my whole life, but was treated for asthma. In my 30's, I was starting to get frequent sinus/lung infections that generally cleared up with antibiotics. When I was 34, I got a lung infection that would not clear up. I was finally diagnosed with CF based on a DNA test. Sweat...

    TOBI podhaler

I've been using TOBI Podhaler since September. In terms of preference, I much prefer the Podhaler because it saves a lot of time over using the nebulizer. The Podhaler treatments are about 5 minutes twice a day. As most people with CF, I have a number of other medical treatments, so I welcome...
