    Newly diagnosed 20 yr old

At 20 and feeling great, it is hard to imagine things changing, but they can and do. Even disregarding his CF diagnosis, you said he has mild bronchiectasis. I'm someone who once pinged an fev1 north of 130%, was diagnosed with mild bronchiectasis around 120% and now just a few years later is...

Anybody try a dairy-free, gluten-free, sugar free diet?

You might eliminate one at a time, so that you are better able to determine which elimination makes a difference in your health. If I were to do it, I'd first eliminate the one I think is least likely to make a difference, and do the most likely one last, so I have the best chance of noticing a...

    Motivating Others

I have a couple activities that I love--rock climbing and dancing. Dancing involves controlling your body--something you yearn to do with a chronic disease. Rock climbing involves containing danger and overcoming an obstacle...'nuf said. Unfortunately, since I was hospitalized last December, I...

    Stenotrophomonas maltophilia

I found a recent study that changes the picture a bit on this bacteria and indicates that it may be less benign than previously thought. However, note the negative impact of the bacteria for chronic infection, not intermittent cultures. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20889901

Does your electric steam sterilizer melt the following equipment?

Duly noted. If I ever get one of those I'll keep it out of the sterilizer. Thanks!

    Low oxygen saturation, good pft's?

I find it interesting that Tumbleweed in this thread has great oxygenation despite a low FEV1 when she posted in April09 and got a transplant in December09 (see sig), eight months later. Seems to indicate what drs say about how things can change quickly, especially as the fev1 is in the lower...

Does your electric steam sterilizer melt the following equipment?

I've melted the mouthpiece of one nebulizer and my aerochamber (mouth portion only). Neither incidents were tragic, since the neb was cheap and the aerochamber still works. However, I've been thinking of thowing my acapella in the steam sterilizer, rather than soaking it in alcohol once a week...

    No more PA

My guess is: Inflammatory response. Irritants and infection cause inflammation. CF lungs you get thicker mucus. Non-CF lungs you get easier to clear mucus, though eventually infections/inflammation with mucus-lite can also damage the airways, hence non-CF bronchiectasis. It's a vicious cycle--I...

    How big are your lungs?

I have the same issue. I've had to be x-rayed twice also and like you, I tell the technicians: beware, they're longer than my height would indicate. I have long torso though, so I figure my longs are normal for my torso? Not sure. Maybe I have extra lung tissue too. Do you have a long...

    Sudden rapid heartbeat?

You've had a traumatic event in which your life was in danger. Now, you are supposed to leave the one safe place where you feel they can save you. It makes complete sense that you would be terrified and full of anxiety. Is that what your racing hb is and chest tightness is? I don't know...
