Thank you Seana, I was thinking the same thing but didn't want to cause any waves.

It is not that they are shoving tons of calories down their throats all day. </end quote></div>

if no one fed them, and they didn't eat for a week, they would lose weight. if they didn't eat for 2 weeks, they would lose even more weight.

why do you think people lose weight when they get gastric by-pass? they are FORCED to reduce calorie intake. that's why they lose weight.

yes, they are shoving tons of calories down their throats. absolutely they are.

calories don't come from the air. weight is a simple calculationg of calories in - calories burned. end of story.

That's why I got soooo darned crabby a few months ago when someone posted on the nutrition section that they had gastric bypass surgery and boo-hoo couldn't afford ADEK's vitamin drops, that they weren't covered under insurance. Wondered if anyone could send them some freebies. With gastric bypass surgery, they tend to malabsorb and are encouraged to try those cool vitamin drops with ADEK...

Meanwhile, when DS was first diagnosed I was having a HECK of a time locating them because the manufacturer had them on back order, my pharmacist couldn't get them... Was finally able to coordinate with CF Services Pharmacy to get them.

I have this chat with my husband all the time. Our town (as much of america) has a ton of obese people (no pun intended with the word ton). This includes within my own family. TO be totally truthful it makes me sick to my stomach to see these obese people. Just as it makes me sick to see excessively skinny people which has included myself during bad times. I mean physically sick for both. I dont know the reasons for either, but given that obesity is now a disease and an epidemic I have to say that its our new found "culture" that is allowing it. My husband just got his new insurance coverage booklet & it now offers tons of meds & services for obesity. THis pissed me off royally. I try not to judge either way because again I dont know the details. BUT when I go to a buffett & I see obese people getting up 3, 4 or 5 times & each time the plate is loaded down with fattening foods......it makes it hard to remember those that might not be contributing to their problem as much. I dont necessarily think I want to "walk in their shoes" since obese people definitely are looked down upon more then the thin, but on the otherhand......its not always a walk in the park to be thin! Pros, Cons, Unknown Info & Hurt Feelings on both sides of this fence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know this is going to be an unpopular response, but I am going to say it.

Some (not all) obese people have medical issues that make them obese. It is not that they are shoving tons of calories down their throats all day. They try and try and can not take off the weight. Do you guys honestly believe people who are overweight want to be that way?? They struggle everyday to take the weight off just as you struggle to keep the weight on.

I was quiet surprised to see how uncompassioniate some of you were. These people have problems, emotionally and physically, and have feelings just like everyone else.

Seana</end quote></div>

You are 100% correct Seana. I have known people who were heavy, Yet ate very healthy and small amounts, but had medical problems that made their bodies go in overdrive ( so to speak) when it came to gaining weight. Then again i also know some heavy people that just eat too darned much....lol.
I also am a bit surprised at the insensitivity i am seeing on here. I would think that with an illness like cf we would be a little more compassionate to others problems. Yes obesity, when it is caused by a persons inability to control them selves is annoying, but not everyones reason for obesity is for that reason. Some are for medical reasons ,just like some cf'rs are thin, it's not because we starve ourselves and want to be "model- waif" thin, it is because of a medical reason. We shouldnt always be so quick to judge .

if someone is obese, and they get gastric bypass, they will lose weight. calorie intake reduced = weight loss.

i won't be sensitive to something that is brought on put puting food in their mouth.

CF has nothing to do with what I do - I was made that way. the reason there isn't sensitivity to an obese person's plight is because it's controllable whereas CF is not.

Thank goodness people on this site realize that....

I hate to cause more problems....
There is a link between morbid obesity and a hormone called leptin. This particualr hormone causes a person to feel full...many people with morbid obesity are either lacking leptin or are resistant to it. I agree that people need to close their mouths and start exercising...but, come on. Some people are that way because they have a GENETIC predisposition that makes them struggle with their weight. I am not talking about fat kids who eat junk and play nintendo (although that is what is going to kill our health care industry)...I am talking about people who have to be lifted with a crane out of bed. Imagine, eating all the time and never being able to stop the insatiable hunger....that is what morbidly obese suffer with every day. Mice studies on mice without leptin eat ALL day long...theycan't quit because they feel like they are starving.

Genetics....I think we all can attest to the fact that it is a roll of the dice.
