Adjusting to "The Vest

Interesting. My now 6 yr old son has been on the vest for 3 years and has always done the 10 hz. We never switch it. We were never told to switch it. I will be asking about this one.

Thank you everyone for your insight. Our "pressure" gague runs in 10s (I guess since brands are different), so I think I am going to move it from the suggested 30 down to about 15 and see what happens.

Fit for this vest is usually pretty loose as it is on the smallest settings possible and is still a little big on her (but was told by the rep that she'd out grow the smaller vest in a month or so). That may be part of the problem.

I have to call the CF clinic today for some refills so I'll see if I can talk to the respiratory therapist to see if I am doing anything wrong.

It is interesting to see where the Hzs started off for folks. I guess it just depends on your clinic.

I talked to my DH about Abby testing us, but we both agree that she probably isn't. She's a lot more go with the flow than our oldest.

Thanks again folks. If anyone else has any thoughts, please share!

DS didn't like being tied down, plus he couldn't hear his tv shows 'cuz with the nebs and vest everything was so loud. I'd say she's probably testing you, too, so just be patient and work slowly, gradually work your way up to the higher speed and pressure, but like others have said, do what she'll tolerate.

We do 10/12/14 with a pressure of 10 on the Hill Rom 104 for 30 minutes twice a day. I do 15-20 minutes of CPT in the early morning because the vest wakes him up and he sleeps thru cpt. We'd rather have him sleep in an extra hour or so.

At our great strides walk last year someone made vests for kids' stuffed animals and one little girl said "No, I don't want one. It'll make 'kitty' itchy and will make her ears itch too" And I've noticed when I'm snuggling DS watching tv with him, it makes MY ears itch.

And when she's older -- an absolutel GODSEND has been video games. DS now ASKS or tells us that it's vest time 'cuz he loves playing video games. Does make the time pass quicker, too.

I cant tolerate the high frequencies that are normally recommended by our clinic. So the therapist sat down with me & went over how I do it & said for me it works fine.

Of course this is a few years after another therapist who thought "outside the box" realized that my airways were very sensitive & the traditional settings caused Negative results for me.
