Anti-inflammatory diet

I hope every parent and person with CF take what dramamama has written here to heart!

I believe the right diet can make a huge difference in how we feel and how well we do.

There is no doubt that CF is an inflammatory disease, it makes perfect sense to do whatever we can to avoid inflammatory substances and environments.

We can all benefit by doing away with the sweets and processed foods which are highly inflammatory and substitute fresh fruits and vegetables along with plenty of good quality protein like certain types of sea food. There are many of these fresh foods with anti-inflammatory properties.

Thank you dramamama!!!

For those that need more calories added to their 'foods' or 'meals' you might want to look into Scandi-cal, it's a powder, I should check the ingredients but that's something you can add pretty much any food! Here's their website:

A question: Where do you get some of that food? Like the wild Salmon if you don't live near the coast? or that healthy protein shake you were talking about? And what is Acai and Kefir?

Hi Hairgirl-
Hope you are feeling better.

I live in Dallas and can find many of these things at whole foods or a "healthy" foods store. If you do not live in an urban area the net can be your best friend!!!

First things first...a great weight gainer... An all natural weight gainer is by a company called naturade. The link for the description is here...

This is a powder that I mix with frozen fruit and goat or cow's milk. It is delish and has plenty of calories. If you mix 2 scoops with 1/2 cup frozen bluberries, cup of milk you are close to 500 calories..like 480 and it tastes so good you just could care less if it is a weight gainer. AND, it is ALL_NATURAL. My guess is that if you called any whole foods, even if they are not in your area, they will help you get it. In my experience, they are the most helpful bunch of people you could ever want to meet

Secondly, you should BUY the book Perricone Promise because it explains sooo much about the inflammatory process that is always going on in your body. On top of that, he explains about all of these little foods that NO ONE has ever heard of before. Kefir, for example, is a fizzy yogart drink full of good bacteria and has actually been used in some areas of the world to treat TB...when no antibiotics are available. I mix it with pomegranete juice and a little natural sweetener )like stevia) and enjoy it as a snack....don't mix it with the weight gainer because they are disgusting together...been there done that.

The other thing, acai, is a fruit indigeous to the amazon rain forest. Up to the publishing of that book, it was considered to have the highest antioxidants of any fruit known..now i think I heard goji berries have more... Anyway, it comes in frozen little packs you can add to a smoothie and it tastes really good.

In the book, Perricone gives every website imaginable where you can order fish and have it shipped to you frozen...he has websites for fresh fish, organic produce, nuts that are sooo healthy for cfers....

What area of the country are you in?

Please pm me if you need anything else... I saw that you pm'd me about glutathione. I get mine through theranaturals....

Update: I stopped using Goji Juice, It started to make me feel tight after awhile, I also cut back on the olive oil because I found out I am allergic to salacilates(sp?) that are abundant in olive oil and some types of citrus fruits. Many people with an asthma component to their CF should get tested for salaciliate allergy before they consume a diet rich in fruits and to a lesser extent vegetables.

I am still able to eat a wide variety of fruits and veggies , I just had to eliminate some of the citrus fruits and olive oil (I switched to canola oil).

Changing your eating habits will change and improve the quality of your life!!!

Eliminating processed foods and most importantly any food with sugar in it will do away with one of the biggest sources of inflammation which is the main cause of lung infections.

When your lungs are inflamed they become a welcoming and favorable breeding ground for all sorts of bugs. When you consume sugar they become inflamed!!

There is a great deal of research that has been done on this subject for a very long time!! If you want to experience a major improvement in your health, stop eating processed sugar!!! Only sugar in the form of pure fruit juices and whole fruits and vegetables are OK.

If medical training had more than just one semester on nutrition and made it a main focus, CF care practices would change dramatically.

DR. Perricone is one of today's leading experts and researchers on the subject of inflammation. His books are a great source of information on the subject and they give very clear guidelines as to how one can eliminate sugars and other harmful foods and start feeling and looking younger and healthier. You will not regret making the changes he recommends!!!

Best wishes to all!!!

Sincerely:

PeterC 58/cf

Hi Dramamama,
I am very interested in the anti-inflamation diet for my daughter who also has mycobactereium abscessus and cfrd. She is 23 and a vegetarian. She eats lots of dairy but no meats or fish. She takes immunical and a seabiotics fish oil suppliment right now. her pfts are in the high 60's to low 70's and is on pulmozyne and hypertonic saline.
How did you keep your weight on? Also, her docs don't think its a good idea either. But we're going to try it and wanted to now how strict you were and if you have any hints.
Thank you for all your postings and information.

AMEN and all that jazz!! Food choices are the single greatest thing we can do for our health or that of our children. It is also so sad to me that physicians know little to nothing about this area...even nutritionists who supposedly study food and it's affects on the body, provide little to no help in CF clinics (although you can consult with others). It is so confusing as a parent new to this disease and a true disservice to the CF community that they are still making recommendations which include sugar and hydrogenated fats as the mainstay of weight gain. Can they not use their smarts and imagination to provide real whole food based solutions? Thank you all for sharing your discoveries as adults, because it speaks louder to me as a parent than much of what I hear at clinic. It really encourages me to stick to my intuition.

We need a CFF equivalent which studies nutrtion, supplements and complimentary care. An organization which could bridge the gap and get it into the clinic setting. Wouldn't that be something to have a naturopath, accupuncturist, chiropractor and massage therapist (plus others) available at every clinic in America? How much could this change CF and disease progression?

Just dreaming...but maybe...
