I sing. I have entered a few competitions for fun and had a few demos done. I think singing really does help lung functions, however, it is not a replacement for exercise. I actually stopped singing for 2 yrs and I lose quite a bit of lung functions. I think if I had continue to sing through those years, then I might not have dropped as fast as I did. I had a huge range and could sing just about anything. However, due to the lung functions dropping and the muscles loosing the strength that they had, I only have half of what I could do. With lower lung functions, its hard to sing as long or as strong as I would like. However, I do sing on local TV station every year at the Cystic Fibrosis telethon. Other than that, I usually keep my singing around family & friends...nothing else public. Not that I dont like singing in public, it just gives me out quicker than it use to. Not only cause of lung functions, but most places around here where you can sing also allow smoking, so I dont go.

Singers store more fat??!!??!!??

I KNEW there was a reason I can't lose these 30 extra pounds!!!!! Uuugghh.

Now, I'm going back to read this most fascinating thread. Emily (at age 2) loves to sing and actually carries a tune. If I play a familar melody on the piano she can figure out what it is and sing along. She also makes up her own songs to familar tunes. This morning it was "I am wet, please change me mom." To the tune of Twinkle, twinkle. I kid you not.

OK, enough de-railing. Off to read.

No singing for me I play drums though, and my doctor thinks it probably does quite a bit for vibrational clearance, I guess you could call it. I also used to play clarinet but I got lazy lol.

Did you all hear of that cute little french singer who had CF? His name was Grégory Lemarchal, and he passed away last year. He was a really neat person though, and a good singer!

wow lots of musicians here! Sheanna, my husband also played drums in high school. That's cool about the vibrational clearance theory Also very cool about the girl who auditioned for American Idol. Too bad she didn't make it.

Just a note - I was not trying to imply that singing etc are a substitute for other exercise or airway clearance. Just thought I'd mention it since any enjoyable activity that could potentially have benefits for the lungs could be really helpful, since it's a lot easier to be consistent with things you love doing. Of course you should still try to do cardio exercise and weight training, but doesn't hurt to do more activities. If you think about it, the training involved with singing includes a lot of breathing exercise that can help with lung functions, and singing is probably a more fun way to do it than some of the standard exercise techniques. I also am skeptical about the claims regarding fat storage... but who knows.
