Anyone been through IVF

Hi Elizab,

I'm the mom to twins Julie was talking about. I know what you mean about feeling like a pioneer going through IVF and having CF. Imagine my surprise when we found out it was twins! I have since found other CFers out there that have given birth to twins, so I know I'm not alone. I'd be happy to answer any of your questions. I'm an open book. I think our age and FEV1 (pre-pregnancy) are very similar.

I am very glad to know of a CF twin mom.

My husband and I plan to do FET with our remainig 11 embryos--eek I was a good responder and I am worried about what to do with the remainders but htats another topic. I think we will try agian perhaps next summer and we were given chances of succes around60-65% with 10-15% chance of twins if we transferred 2 embryos for the IVF (which we did). I do not know if the stats will be same doing an FET but my husband and I have been discussing this and what woudl happen if I did get pg with twins how it would go etc etc (we discussed this before trying IVF also but now having been through one pregnancy and newborn it sheds new light on what it mgiht be like-kwim?).

Anyway I would love to hear a bit about your experience.

Hi Tara and Nicole,

Great to hear from you both - many thanks. Nicole - I didn't take your super-healthy comment the wrong way at all, it's just I never know exactly what my best is! I've read some people on these boards who have talked about raising their FEV1 significantly before they tried to get pregnant and to be honest, I can't see that happening (at least not without giving up work) so I'm firing ahead more in hope than expectation!

Ok that's not entirely true - I am trying but failing not to get my hopes up too high - but I suspect everyone goes through the same thing. And it's great to find yourself and Tara who have been successful with IVF while having CF.

Thanks for the advice on work etc - I'm generally very focussed on work but for the last while I've found that this is the thing I really want and I want to do everything I can to make it more possible.

Tara - did you get pregnant on your first IVF attempt? (Many congrats on the twins) Also did you use an injected down-regulator or a nasal spray? I'm due to take the injection as my sinuses tend to be pretty congested.

I'm sure I'll think of a million other questions for you both if you don't mind me picking your brains.

Talk to you again soon,

Elizab

PS I'm Irish by the way so if I seem to be posting at odd times that's why!

Elizab,

I did IVF 3 years ago, and I'm trying to figure out what you mean by "down regulator". All of the IVF drugs I took were injections. I took Lupron to supress my cycle until we started the stims. Is that what you mean by "down regulator?"

For me, there were two reasons for IVF. My cervix was clogged with mucus, so no swimmers were making it through to my uterus on their own. I also had stage IV endometriosis (unrelated to CF). Endo can inhibit implantation, therefore when our 3 rounds of clomid/IUI didn't work, we went straight to IVF. And it worked the first time! I had about 40 follies visible on the u/s, however only 11 of them had eggs. My Estrogen levels were over 8,000 (no that's not a typo, EIGHT THOUSAND!) But I never did get OHSS. Of our 11 eggs, 5 of them fertilized into embryo's and we transferred 4 embryo's on day 3. The last embryo stayed in the lab until day 5, at which point it was discarded because it was too delicate to survive a freeze and thaw for future FETs. Two of my embies stuck and we have twins now. There are obviously more details, and you are free to ask questions anytime!

As far as CF goes, my health was stable at FEV1 in the mid 50's. During the pg I got sick and had to go on inhaled antibiotics (aztreonam) It helped a lot and by the end of my pregnancy I was in the mid 60's!!! Higher than I had been in several years. I never went into labor and I had a scheduled c-section at 38 weeks. I have loads of pics online from the c-section here:

And since I love to show the twins off, we have more photos here:

The most recent photos will be in the February 2007 folder, found in the "Monthly Highlights" link.

My PFTs now are in the mid-40's and have been there for 2 years. I feel winded most days, but I just adore the twins and love taking care of them. I have all my immediate family nearby, so when I'm sick and need help, they are here for me, since DH does work full time. My mom is retired too, so she is the first one I usually call since she doesn't have a job. My brother also has CF and he stays home full time, so that is useful as well.

I hope some of this helps. I joined an IVF Yahoo Group while I was going through the process. It was a huge help. I then moved on to one group called pgafterivf in the Yahoo Groups and now I'm in a parenting group where I still keep in contact with several IVF mommies every day!

Are you referring to IVF with pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)? If so the process is pretty much the same but before they put the embryos back in they test each one to see if it is afflicted with whatever disease you are testing for then they only put back the ones that do not have CF. You can get support for this at the boards I mentioned in my previous post I am not familiar iwth the yahoo groups.
