AquADEK reaction?

Well this is certainly small potatoes compared to what is going on in other people's lives here on the boards, BUT - We just gave Katy her first AquADEK softgel (which she swallowed whole in applesauce, yay Katy my big girl!) but about 15 minutes later she was rolling around on the floor, burning up all over her body, which was red with white blotches. No fever. Thank goodness DH was home because I hate to deal with strange medical problems all by myself....

Anyway he got her in the shower and cooled her body off while I called our ped. We have a pulse oximeter (being the paranoid CF parents that we are!!) and her o2 was 100. While waiting for the ped to call back I'm googling like crazy to determine if/when allergic reactions warrant a trip to the ER. Doc called and suggested Benadryl, and wondered about something called a "niacin flush". This triggered a memory in DH, who says he remembers back in the oilfield days guys would take a mega dose of niacin to mask drug test results and this is exactly what he was seeing in Katy (i.e. he remembers seeing the same symptoms/reaction in them).

Long (sorry!) story short - Katy will not be taking the remaining 59 AquADEK's (anyone want them - PM me) and they are not prescription so don't give me "the lecture" Also - has anyone else had this reaction?

I think it's called a niacin flush when that happens.
Got a little info from wikipedia and posted here in case anyone was curious. Here's the wiki page if it helps any...<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niacin

Known side effects of niacin at high dosages of 500mg+....usually called niacin flush.

facial flushing and itching
dry skin
skin rashes
gastrointestinal complaints
blurred vision
possible liver toxicity

Dana,

That 's sounds scary! I don't have experience with that happening. I have heard about the niacin causing flushing reaction. Years ago, it was thought niacin was good for cardiac patients and some cardiologists would prescribe high dose niacin; some patients coulod not tolerate it, so we would have to stop the niacin. I assume there is niacin in Aquadeks? My daughter does not take them. Hopefully that's all that was.

We just switched to Aquadeks...haven't had any problems thus far. That sounds like it was a little scary though....phew. We would have freaked out for sure! Are there different forms of niacin? My thought is perhaps niacin is extracted different ways and maybe a different form would be okay for her body.

Also, I do believe if you are severely low in a particular vitamin you can have a temporary reaction some doctors term a "healing crisis" which is actually a sign the body is in need of it. It might be worth asking about or following up with a more detailed vitamin panel to see if she is particularly low in B vitamins.

Just some thoughts. Whole foods vitamins may be something to look at for her with perhaps extra ADEK if need be.
