bacteria in showerheads...new study

I cultured MAC in my sputum a couple of years ago, and my doctor said that it was very likely to have come from the water in the shower. He told me to turn the hot water heater to where it stayed really hot and the bacteria can't live in such hot conditions. Plus, I usually take very hot showers anyways. Unfortunately, a couple of months ago, my brother cultured it also. The doctor said that MAC is increasingly common in CF adults. Thankfully, neither of us have much damage from it yet.

I am a shower-taker and this topic has made me somewhat nervous. I do know the steam in the shower frequently helps me cough up mucous that is stuck. I have severe arthritis in my hands and unscrewing a shower head frequently is a problem (I live alone). Oh well. I read somewhere on this site about UT-Tyler being the go-to place if you do culture MAC. Here's a FAQ doc they have posted on their site:

It states you can get MAC from water, air and soil. I grew a vegetable garden last year and my Dr. said I must wear gloves if I do it again. (Plus a double face mask and goggles, since I'm highly allergic to pollens.). I think I'll stick to my watercolor painting. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

We read about this several months ago when our baby was born with CF. We found in many articles that if dramatically decreases the amount of bacteria if you turn the shower to the hottest setting and let it spray before you choose your temp and get in. They said the majority of the bacteria comes out in that first initial blast.

We worked with Joe Falkinham (cited in this article) when my boys were diagnosed with NTM. Although the NTM did not come from our showers, learning about it did open our eyes. Now we take our shower heads apart and clean with bleach. We also have the boys use the tub shower rather than the stall shower because there is more air circulation. Scary stuff!
