Bad Fingernails

I have probably the crappiest fingernails of anyone I know. They get to be a certain length, and then that's it. They start to chip, and the first layer of the nail actually begins to split away from the rest at the tip. Its so frustrating!! At first I thought it was a calcium issue, so I started taking 1000mg of calcium supplement along with my regular diet (in which I eat a ton of dairy, anyway, so I know I'm getting the calcium I should). Yet my nails continue to be horrible. I've tried putting one of those nail-strengthening clear coats on them, too. Doesn't help. Its only my fingernails that do it, though. My toenails are fine (go figure)!

Is this another of those lovely perks of CF? Perhaps it has to do with the clubbing? Does anyone else have this problem? If so, have you figured out a way to keep your nails from chipping?

Any feedback would be great!

I have horrible finger nails too! It my be a CF thing. I don't think it is from clubbing because I have no clubbing. I think it is from a lack of something.

I consider my nails healthy but they do chip on occassion and get to a certain length before they start breaking off, which I like mine only at a certain length anyways cause any longer it gets harder to type. I never really considered my nails a problem one thing I hate is cuticles it seems like when I cut them off it misses my skin up and I get a lot of hang nail type of stuff or skin sticking up and Im constantly cutting the skin around the nail. I do pull layers of my nail off but then I cut it to make my whole nail even. I dont do anything different but once in awhile ill put clear/strengthing nail polish on and other than that on occasion I just keep up on the maintenance of my nails. I figured that if I kept my nails looking nice and healthy than no one will really notice the slight clubbing I have. Hope that helped some.

I don't have CF (just a carrier but your nails sound EXACTLY like my nails. Although, Ethan's doctor did say I have mild clubbing ("but not in the way a CFers clubs"). So, it may be due to CF or not. Maybe genetics? I don't know, but I'd like to find a way to make them better They DO NOT get long, they are flimsy, and split. I could bend them in any way, including backwards! ha!
