Blood works was very bad today!

My son has always had problems with the lab people not being able to get a good stick. One of them told me to give him a lot of liquids prior to the blood draws and it would make the veins larger/plumper - seems to help a little, but it still takes multiple sticks for him.For other shots one of our doctors (not the cf one) uses an aerosol spray that sort of freezes the site - they used to use Emla but this aerosol works instantly rather than having to wait for the Emla. I want to try it on myself just to see what it feels like, but they never leave it in the room unattended<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">.

Oh my gosh! My first baby was 14 months when she had to be tested for a bleeding disorder. 45 minutes of non-stop screaming later, they never got enough and had to refer us to Children's Hospital for more in-depth testing. That was when I learned about Emla. NO ONE touches my kids with needles anymore unless they numb them first.

Someone has so traumatized M that he hyperventilates the second he hears he's going to see a doctor..any doctor. He asked me a dozen times last Thursday if I was *SURE* his therapist didn't have any needles in his office. And, he poops himself when he sees the needles.

It just rips your heart out to see your baby scared and in pain. Seriously, DH (just1more) is right, demand Emla or LM-X. Our Children's hospital has a poster on the wall telling you to ASK for the LM-X and they offer it automatically when you show up. But, I carry my own in my purse and just slather that stuff on any kid I think is going to need needles for any reason.

Sarah,
We have a three poke rule. Two if I dont like how they are acting about the situation. After six years of this Payton has learned who he likes so if it is out patient he asks for his fav guy Mike and if he is being admitted there is another guy he trusts. I have called in charge nurses before to get one nurse to stop poking him. Hope next time goes alot better.

My first question to anyone new poking my son is "how much experience do you have poking little ones? My son is not a pin cushion to be practiced on".
My son has had a lot of pokes. If the phlebotomist does not get in the first time another comes in. We have never had to have a third come in.

Reciently my son was at the University of Nebraksa Medical Center and I have never seen more skilled phlebotomist then the ones there. They made it look like an art form!
