Hi Flax oil and fish oil contain omega 3 fatty acids which are really beneficial for cf'ers. You can take capsules and do it that way.

I just want to share something funny about fenugreek. When I started using it I was in survival mode and was totally focused on getting Griffin well. I started to smell something funny shortly afterward. I was literally running around my house smelling everything! Walls, floor, you name it. I finally realized what I was smelling was like maple syrup! It was baffling to me. I was convinced there was some sort of mold or fungus growing somewhere that smelled like maple syrup. One morning I caught a whiff of my armpit! Yep, Maple syrup.

Fenugreek is the flavoring in artificial maple syrup. Just so you know, you're not crazy.

I just have to say good for you for not giving up. My sons doctor told me the same thing.
First BF then pump and formula, then just do formula. Well I stopped BF completely at 10 mos (advice from dr's; and I believed them). At that point my son's weight dropped of the charts completely. My son is 15 months and I'm still trying to get him back on the charts.

Doctors got it all wrong...Good luck with the allergist and the BF!!

(3 failed sweat tests, passed 70-mutation test, still unkown cause for lack of weight gain and morning cough sesssions)

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that about fenugreek... If you are taking enough fenugreek to boost your supply you will smell a sweet maple syrup smell in your sweat and urine....

I just want to add while flax oil is a good source of omega 3 fatty acids it doesn't have any DHA in it (a type of omega 3 which is really good for brain development and CFers really need it.) Most people are inefficient at converting omega 3s to DHA so it really is better to take the fish oil or cod liver oil to be sure you are getting enough to boost the levels in your milk. Also there is DHA in fish especially wild salmon ... anchovies are a good source too but if you arn't eating much fish then it is especially important to take the fish oil... plus the fish oil and cod liver oil is purified away from any contaminants like mercury

I'm just another mom w/ CF who is breastfeeding. I think all the other posters have said everything I would have said. DON'T STOP!! I have seen SO MANY nursing relationships ruined by terrible advice from doctors who don't know what they're talking about. Have you seen an IBCLC? They may be able to help you out as well - they can weigh him to see how much he's taking during a feeding.

Your son is growing and meeting his milestones right? Then he's probably just fine. My son does not have CF yet he is somewhere between 5 and 10% on the charts. He's 2.5 and weighs about 25 lbs. Because he's healthy and normal, nobody is concerned. But I bet that if he had CF his doctors would be though.

Try contacting your local LLL leader. They may have some local resources that you could utelize.

My mom nursed me till I was 2.5 and my brother (also w/ CF) till he was 3.5 and I am so thankful to her for doing so.

Lastly, my son reacted to dairy in my diet so I had to eliminate it from about 4 months -2 years. He's better now but I noticed that I did better w/o a lot of dairy. I never drank milk but did eat ice cream and cheeses. Good luck!!
