CF and Highschool...

Ohh, as for the teachers, just get your doctor to talk to them, or write them a letter explaining it in detail, and they should understand. Or talk to your head about them being unsympathetic, and then he/she should sort it out =]

1. Do you talk to your friends about CF? I think it is extremely awkward and try to avoid it at all costs, though I'm not sure why...

If they are close friends then yes I would advise them about it because they can help gather your homework when your not there or come visit you in the hospital so you wont be lonely, but if they aren't close to your then I wouldn't talk to them about it.

2. When you miss school, how is the best way to make up the work? I always find that I am totally confused when I return and also the teachers are sometimes kind of unsympathtic.

I was supposed to be on a 504 plan but the school I was with didnt avide by it so I had trouble making up 3 weeks of work all by myself. Senior year I finally had a tutor. Ask your friends for notes if you are unable to get a tutor...or tell the teachers ahead of time to give you some kind of notes for help. As for why they are unsympathetic...Im not sure every person is different....you have to figure they have seen many kids come and go and to get emotionally attached to every one of them is going to be hard.

3. If I don't want to talk with someone about CF, and they ask you a question like, "Why do you always take those pills?" or say, "You were in the HOSPITAL?!?! OMG WHY??"

Well...I know this sounds bad...but what is a good excuse?

My way of dealing with it WAS lying. I told them I had bad asthma. They dropped it from there. As far as I was concerened I didnt need anyone talking about me behind my back etc..etc... in highschool like everyone does to everyone knowing my personal business. And really they shouldnt know that you are taking pills because you should be going to the nurse for them no? Unless you tell them your taking pills or taking them by yourself...if you dont feel comfortable telling anyone that approaches you on it about it...its perfectly ok to lie. Trying to dumb down the explanation for people who dont know about CF can be tought and confusing....besides you'll never know who heard about it through Biology class too....

1. Do you talk to your friends about CF? I think it is extremely awkward and try to avoid it at all costs, though I'm not sure why...

I have always hid my CF from people until this year. I'm a senior and no longer afraid to hide my CF. That's just something that comes at a different point for everyone. Honestly, do what feels comfortable for YOU.

2. When you miss school, how is the best way to make up the work? I always find that I am totally confused when I return and also the teachers are sometimes kind of unsympathtic.

I'm going into the hospital this Monday (for IVs) and I told my teachers two weeks ago that I was going to be out, reminding them again this past week. I have a good friend in each class that is taking EXTRA good notes for me and teachers who are willing to help me either via email or coming up to the hospital to visit me. Your school should have some sort of rules about excused absences and making up work. Look into it.

3. If I don't want to talk with someone about CF, and they ask you a question like, "Why do you always take those pills?" or say, "You were in the HOSPITAL?!?! OMG WHY??"

Well...I know this sounds bad...but what is a good excuse?

I give them the borderline basics "I don't take in nutrients like other people and these pills help me to." And as far as doctor visits and stuff, when they ask why I went to the doctor "It was just a regular checkup." Or for the hospital, "I just needed a tune-up." Smile when you tell them these things. Try not to be abrasive. And if they ask more, just reply with things like "I just do." You are not obligated by ANYONE to tell more than you feel like telling. But don't lie. Be honest, but as brief or in-depth as you feel comfortable.

Hope this helps!

1. Do you talk to your friends about CF?
not unless they ask. even then you have think about how deep a friend they are to determine how much detail you go into.

2. When you miss school, how is the best way to make up the work?
talk to the teacher or have a parent talk to the teacher. my mom would rip any teacher a new one that was unsympathetic.

3. If I don't want to talk with someone about CF, and they ask you a question like, "Why do you always take those pills?" or say, "You were in the HOSPITAL?!?! OMG WHY??"
yeah, that doesn't stop once you're out of high school - that's for life. sorry.
you could make up something crazy about being absent cuz you were in the hospital:
you were building homes for the people of Tanzania while traveling with the Peace Corps for a month...
