My non-CF oldest son has bad seasonal allergies, and he needs a combination of meds to get them under control EVERY year: singulair, zyrtec and then a 5 day course of orapred. It stinks!!!

As for calling the ped or the CF doc, I agree with call the one who seems to know the most about the issue. I only call the ped when the CF team has exhausted their concerns and send me back to the pediatrician. When I took my daughter for her 15 month well child, I was fresh out of her first CF hosptialization. During the IV experience, her liver enzymes elevated quite a bit and I was really concerned. Our CF doc has said NO TYLENOL, EVER. For her, because of possible liver issues. So I mentioned to our ped that I was concerned, and she answered that I shouldn't worry, "CF kids don't have liver issues". How's that for uneducated? And she did a rotation with THIS CF center just a few years ago!!! I decided that she can't care for my daughter with anything CF related. Just basic baby/toddler stuff.

My youngest daughter had SOOOO many sinus infections as a baby it wasn't funny! She had them when she was under a year old. Her eyes would get junk in them and her nose would be yukky! She had many ear infections too.

I always call my girls CF clinic about anything respiratory or digestive. Sore throats, pink eye, etc. normally go to the ped.

I would definately have allergies tested. Neither one of my girls really showed any allergy problems when little. But about a year ago my oldest started having problems, but it took me a while to think that it could be allergies. We had her tested this spring, and the poor thing is allergic to every tree and mold she was tested for.

So, before I would think that maybe she was having some sort of lung flare up or sinus infection requiring antibiotics, and her clinic would put her on them based on the symptoms I would give them. And she would get better, but it was probably more due to the fact that the allergy count went down, not the antibiotic kicking in.

Now, I can monitor the allergy counts and she can be treated properly. I had my younger daughter tested too, but she was not allergic to anything but aspergillus (as is my older daughter).

I absolutely love my son's pediatrician! No matter how busy he's office may be that day; he ALWAYS gets my son right in. Now after a thorough exam if the problem seems to be related to respiratory or digestion issues, he always refers us to the CF clinic. He is a wonderful, caring pediatrician, and not afraid to say "Hey lets let the specialist take care of this one."

Both clinic and the pediatrician are in constant contact through fax both ways and both doctors see EVERYTHING that goes in Briceton's file even from well visits.
Now ANY other doctors in my town, I don't trust at ALL with my sons care. When we have to go to the ER, if his pediatrician happens not to be on call that night, we ask for a transfer to Vanderbilt Children's hospital where his clinic is. That usually ends up being a 2 hour bumpy, uncomfortable ambulance ride. But hey, as mothers we would travel to the end of the earth for our kids.

Also, neither the pediatrician nor the CF clinic will "just" call in medications...Briceton haves to be seen and examined before prescribing meds. Which I find to be a wonderful practice.
