Interesting train of thought. Can't say that I agree with you, but it's more of a semantics issue than anything else. The "compare and contrast" game rarely yields a winner. As the late Erma Bombeck put it "the grass is always greener over the septic tank."

Along the same lines of playing the "which is worse" game is the temptation to set up camp in "The Land of If"

"The Land of If"

There is a place not far away
though its name you may not know
where each of us visits most everyday,
(and some are too eager to go!)
In this land we all have seen
the way we wish things were,
sometimes we see what might have been,
and the things that are still unsure.

It is the Land of If--
we've all been once or twice.
Usually it's quite lonely there
(and rarely is the weather nice.)

The Land of If might seem like a way
to deal with busyness and flurry,
but really it's just another way
to invite in fears and worry.
Beware of this land! Stay far away!
(I know it can be tough)
Keep your thoughts in the present day
for it has problems enough.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. --Matthew 6:34 (NIV)

I have lots of words for CF, but merciful isn't one.

I would much rather have Ry be deaf or blind. A million times over. I would rather be deaf or blind.

There are some diseases worse than Cf, I'll give you that...but that doesn't make CF merciful, any more than losing your legs is merciful because hey, you could have lost your arms too.

I saw what CF did, I wantched it steal my husband away day by day by day. I would never call it merciful, or a blessing. I'd call it a sadistic disease.

Mercy is defined by wordnet.princeton.com as alleviation of distress; leniency

merciful:CF

cyanide: decongestant

The above example is perhaps the only case in which I would pair the words CF and merciful.

Not sure if merciful is the best word, but I do agree with what u are saying ihatecf. It could be worse. I remind myself of that fact often. I could have spinal bifida, deaf, blind, MS, cancer or a number of other things that seem so much harder to live with. So I agree that it could be worse but then again, it could be a lot better. So I see both sides, not the worse thing but not the best either.

I don't want to really get into this because it's a useless pissing contest.

But I will say this on behalf of the deaf community:

Most deaf people (especially, it seems, those born deaf) would be INCREDIBLY offended by that statement. That dying early is better than being deaf. Deaf is hardly even a disability. That is under debate by many (deaf included) because while they can't hear, they can function as good as anyone frickin else. They can use TTYs instead of phones (or any form of internet, email, AIM, etc these days), they have vibrating alarms, they have flashing light fire alarms, and can drive. They may not be able to speak English (oh my god, tragedy), but they can sign among themselves, and it works JUST AS WELL as any spoken language.

Not to mention sign language is an @ssload more fun than spoken language anyways.

So I just thought I'd let you know that was a rather offensive statement to make.
