coughing attacks at night time

I sleep on my stomach. That is usually very effective, but I have a hard time breathing on my back in general. If the cough is problematic, I sometimes will get a codeine based cough medicine. It helps a bit, but isn't so strong it dehydrates me. Another alternative: You may want to try a sleep aid (such as Tylonol PM as others have said). Those don't help me though, I fall asleep quick, but I wake up after a few hours and have a hard time sleeping after. I always end up extremely tired the whole next day.

Try different options on different nights, see what works best for you.

20 Valeriana drops taken in a bit of water. Calms you down, relaxes muscles - which for me helps coughing fits esp if due to flu infection. Its herbal/homeopathic and i can get it at most pharmacies/drug stores/alternative health places here. Altho its herbal its very effective and works immediately. (Smells a bit funny tho). Can be taken in the day as well when feeling stressed out, won't make you drowsy just relaxed and chilled out. In Germany known as 'Baldrian".
Just an additional thought, if i am otherwise healthy but get the 2am cough attack I attribute it to certain food, mostly junk foods, dairy, wheat, sugar, preservatives. If I stick to my healthy diet for a few days i can sleep flat on my back (I know, I never even thought this was possible!). In the ate-to-much-junk case the only thing that helps is to do a nebuliser treatment and sleep propped up.
Good luck (and get ur lung functions checked out, if ur losing sleep perhaps u do need treatment)

Aspiemom,

Could my son who is 10 be able to try the tea? Sun thru Tues. he has had coughinh fits at night. He slept propped up and I gave him his treatments. He usually has these fits for 2-3 hrs. I guess he would be too young for nyquil? The pretzels is a good idea. I didn't realize that could help. His Dr. put him on pretizone (sp?) steroid.

Thanks for the good ideas everyone.

Thanks for all the other suggestions. Debbi, I'm like you . . . something hot, any herbal tea helps me as long as it has no caffeine. I'll give the ginger tea a try next time. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
