Daily bloating - Mystery solved!

I have been tinkering with my diet, too. I have noticed the more bread and pasta that I eat, the bigger the belly gets. There's a physician that has a book out called "Wheat Belly" that I'm interested in. Just because you give up wheat doesn't mean you can't have bread or pasta. I buy pasta that's made from spinach. Sometimes I buy potato bread or that Ezekiel bread. I used to have a friend who made her own bread (in a breadmaker) from spelt.

I'm also finding the less red meat I eat, the less constipation I have. I still eat meat on occasion, but nothing like I used to.

Thanks <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> The older and wiser I get the more I see the need to know where my food is coming from and to do what I can to get it *fresh* locally or grow it myself. It also works out economically too. I am spending more on grass fed beef from a local rancher (more than store bought beef) but not buying all the processed junk that I used to (cereal, crackers, bread, pasta, frozen dinners, etc) so I think it works out even. I want to eat more fish but it scares me a little from a cooking aspect - I have literally NO idea how to cook fish. It never turns out the way I want it to.

MiddleAgedLady - I have "wheatbelly" on order at the library but there are 10 others in front of me. Have you checked out the website and blog? The Dr who wrote the book has a blog and it has been a really interesting read. not only his posts but the comments that follow. So many people have literally changed their lives around just by not eating wheat. I was eating sprouted grain ezekiel bread but stopped buying it. I feel that it was still wheat. And from what I have recently learned, sprouting doesn't remove as much phytic acid as I thought so it is a no no for our (my family's) teeth. Have you tried grass fed beef? Nutritionally it is a far cry from feed lot beef and may be easier on your digestion. We are also really loving the great flavor of it.

I know for a fact wheat makes my daughter more congested, we use it but cut it down to a minimum. I did find that ezekial bread is made from sprouted grains and lentils the way the Bible instructs us to prepare grain. Much more energy and no bloats, and dips in energy.

Samantha, Do you mind me asking if you are able to keep healthy weight. I think the paleo/ blood type/ caveman diet and natural foods are key to health especially with the toxins from all the cf medicines. Our cf nutritionist disagrees and wants us to pack her up with all the fat, sugar, junk we can including processed foods and shakes to keep healthy weight. This has always been a struggle for me. I agree with YOU by gut instinct.<br>

I do keep a healthy weight. I believe the more mucous you produce, the more your ducts in your pancreas and GI system are coated with mucous as well. Plus my hope is the more balanced my blood sugar is naturally, the less stress I am putting on my pancreas and lessening my chances of CFRD. Just a theory. I have always held a normal weight. When I was young, my mother juiced carrots and veggies for me a lot, like 6x a day. Most of the scaring in my chest disappeared. I still juice! If you are having issues putting on weight, I would suggest adding raw nut butters and coconut oil to smoothes and whatever you can think of. I believe the active enzymes in raw foods are extremely benificial to people with CF! Systemic enzymes help break down scar tissue and mucous through out the body. Plus when you eat clean, you feel better! You have more energy. Your skin glows. You dont feel like you need a nap constantly. I like to experiment and see what makes me feel best. I dont subscribe 100% to anyones belief. My husband is my greatest soundboard as far as my experiments go. After the birth of our daughter when I gave up dairy and switched to a high raw diet, he was the first one to point out all the benefits. He no longer had to hear me cough in my sleep <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> I could go on and on. I am a seeker of health and healing for myself and others. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Glad to see that the Paleo or Primal diet is catching on with the CF community. I went Paleo and started working out about 5 months ago and the results are amazing. I had/have severe acid reflux and since I eliminated milk and grains I have had very few episodes. Plus I have lost weight (needed to), gained muscle and have more energy than ever. Plus my PFT's have improved and I haven't been sick. I would suggested that people at least give it a try. I still have the occasional cheats especially this time of year but even an 80% Paleo diet is a huge improvement and will get results.

I think there is a lot of sense with some of these diets; and if you have the will power and can eat enough food to maintain a healthy weight, then my hat is off to you. I eat a fairly healthy diet and work hard to maintain a healthy weight. While I can will myself to eat a ton to gain weight when needed, even when I have no appetite, I don't think I could pull this off. I surely would lose weight. From my quick reading here, it seems some of the biggest success stories are from those who needed to also lose some weight. (I could of missed something) I guess I would be interested in those who can eat this diet and also gain weight. I understand you can add oils and fats to up the calories, but who has had success doing this and has had their health and weight increase.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>

The body does not need carbs. The brain does not need carbs. When carbs are very low the body produces keytones for the brain instead of using carbs to feed it. </end quote>

Since I've begun study anatomy in college I've come to realize that there's so much we still have to learn about how our miraculous bodies work. Ketones will cause your blood to become acidic, which is a big no-no (funny, we were JUST talking about this exact thing 2 days ago in class!). A few ketones for a short period of time may be ok, but for anextendedperiod of time it's really not beneficial. That's why doing the Atkin's Diet incorrectly (or at all) ir not recommended.
Your body does need carbs. Not refined cards, not pasta, not cookies. Carbs. Fruit. Vegetables, the like.
The brain require glucose to function and glucose mainly comes from carbohydrates. Other organs will shut down and give up their supply of glucose so that the brain may function.
So eat your carbs people!
I've heard about CF peeps cutting out gluten and grains, and it sounds reasonable, but I really, REALLY like oatmeal
</end quote>

Sorry to break it to you but, you don't need carbs. There are people on totally negligible amounts of carbs due to diabetes. I have done a lot of research on this subject and so has my dad who has type 2. Just because your teacher in college that you may or may not pay $20,000-$50,000 a year to go told you so doesn't make it right. Next you are going to tell me that its unhealthy to eat butter and lard... I'll blow that right out of the water.</end quote>

Ok, first of all, what does the tuition I may or may not pay have to do with anything? That's completely irrelevant and slightly childish to mention. And this isn't info from 1 teacher, but from many classes about anatomy and nutrition.I'm sure you've heard of Diabetic Ketoacidosis then, even though it's more of a Type 1 issue than Type 2. Excessive ketones in the blood due to the body using only fat as a fuel (because one is not getting enoughglucose)makes the blood acidic, and causes a whole mess of problems. I'm not saying, "Hey, go eat 300 grams of carbs per meal, they're totally good for you!" I'm saying that if you cut out carbs COMPLETELY, as some people here seem to be suggesting, then you WILL GET SICK. Since us CFers have high chances of getting CFRD, don't think that I don't know anything about the disease. And I'll say this: It IS unhealthy to eat butter and lard.... in massive quantitites.

this is a very interesting topic. I have been trying to follow a balanced alkaline type of diet with my dd who is 4 y/o (not adhering to any commercial diet though). I cut out everything processed, preservatives, additives, sugars etc. She eats lots of vegetables, fruits etc. But how in the world can one eliminate dairy and grains from a child's diet? I mean she eats meat and veggies for lunch, i can't give her the same thing at dinner. And what about calcium? It comes mostly from milk and dairy, i would not want to substitute that with pills or something. Any ideas?

Have you tried milk alternatives? Personally I love Almond Milk, which can have more Calcium than milk, though I don't know what the bio-availability of it is. Still, it's delicious. Dairy is fairly simple to skirt around, what with so many people lactose-intolerant.I know Kirkland (Costco) sells giant bags of Calcium suppliment chews in chocolate flavor; my grandparents eat them and I think they taste pretty good too! Each one has 500mg of Calcium which is more than enough for 1 meal. Also, check out some vegan books/blogs etc. That's one of the most commonly asked questions to vegans: "How do you get enough Calcium/protein?" It can be done.
