My favorites are below. They have been spoken to me by people that I believe just want "off the hook" and didn't want to give any practical support. If these says were true, then whatever "bad" thing was happening to me or my loved one was something that I <i>should</i> be dealing with successfully all by myself (and keeping to myself, too).
<b>"God never gives you more than you can handle"</b>
[variation] <b>"God knows you are stronger than most, so he gave this challenge to you."</b>
Bull! First of all I don't believe in God. Secondly, the psychiatric hospitals and alleyways are full of people that have been given more than they can handle.
<b>"Everything happens for a reason."</b>
Bull! Exactly "who" would be determining that reason. Oh, yes that would be your god that I don't believe in. Or maybe you are suggesting that human "cause and effect" is at play and I have caused this thing that depresses me to happen. Bull! Random stuff happens.
<b>"Everything is attitude"</b>
[variation] <b>There's lots you can't control, but you can always control your attitude</b>
So not only are you depressed as he**, but it's your fault you can't change your attitude and just snap out of it. This crowd believes that chemical or drug (read steroid) induced depression does not exist and (I suppose) cannot be treated. Nor do they see depression as one of the natural human emotions and almost necessary to experience if someone is going to go all the way through a major loss.
