Gosh I would be tickled pink if they would run CF ads in the US. Talk about raising awareness!!!!

The reality is that people die from CF every day. So I have no issues with a commerial stating that a person is dying from CF. Perhaps the reason it's bothering you is because you have yet to come to terms with this disease and your own mortality?

I totally agree with amy

Back in 2000 I lost a young friend to CF> She was 12. I'm all too aware of the reality that CF still kills and that it still kills the young. Unfortunatly kids still die from it, not as often but it happens.

I hate seeing CF pictured as not that big of a deal because its still a serious and progressive illness. Its not something that is no big deal. It still kills!

To paint as something akin to asthma is just wrong. To paint it as an easily controllable disease is wrong.

But then here I would be happy to see any kind of commercial about CF!

I would much rather the seriousness/goriness of the disease be told then an ad downplaying it.

Many people in my community have heard of CF and may know of someone who has the disease, but those same people don't know the seriousness of the disease.

I have said it a million times and I'll say it again. If one more person comes up to me and tells me that Briceton is going to be okay because they know of someone who has CF and runs marathons, is never sick, and is 41 years old, I am going to SCREAM!!!!!!

People need to know the truth! CF is a horrible/unpredictable disease and it kills its victims!!

But like everyone else, I would love to see any commercial here in the US about CF. People need so much more ducaton on this disease in the states.

I've never seen an ad for CF awareness in the US either. I think it might bother me a little to see that commercial of deflating people because I know what the real CF is like, the reality of it. But I'd rather see that than downplaying it for sure. When my son was first diagnosed I remember my dad saying, "So it's just like he'll always be walking around with a cold then right?" and as I tried to explain to him that that was not the case he said, "Oh, so its like asthma but a little worse."
I understand what he was trying to do, make me feel like its not that bad and my son will be okay. But I don't like it when people who don't know what we (the whole cf community, not just my family) deal with on a daily basis and assume its just like a cold or asthma. Its alot more serious than that and I wish more people knew that.

Hmmm, I really didn't know that they didn't have CF commercials other places.... It might also be hard for me to express why these commercials bother me then, although I do agree that CF shouldn't be downplayed. In most of the commercials I've seen they don't explain what CF IS... they use words like 'dying' but don't mention constant coughing or hospitalizations or lung transplants or any of the ways that CF affects people. So if you mention CF to someone who had only seen these commercials, I honestly don't know if they'd understand what it is, but might remember the death part-- which certainly isn't the impression I would like to give people. Actually, come to think of it, I'm not even sure if they mention it's a chronic illness....
My point being, I don't think sheer scare tactis are terribly effective ON THEIR OWN, and cause more distress to those of us with CF than knowledge or empathy to those they don't.
But thank you to everyone for sharing your views... it does help me to understand those scare tactics a little bit more...

I think it would bother me also to see these commercials. Especially if they mentioned no facts but just mentioned the dying part. I don't feel I am "dying" of the disease. There is so much more to it than just death. To me, I have this disease that makes my life harder and there are many things that I have to do to feel well. I know I will die of this disease but it is almost too easy to say, "oh, so and so is dying of CF". I feel I am fighting a daily battle not to die of CF anytime soon so they should mention the battle we face everyday.

I am Sorry to say that I have Never seen
a CF commercial here in the US.

Not sure why, but I would be okay with it
asl long as they didn't refer to us as
Cfer's. Thet is only for another Cfer or a spouse
or parent. When Someone else says it sounds
Bad, To me anyway.

The first time I was in the hospital from Cf
I had 2 interns stand on either side of the bed talking
as if I wasen't there, and ther called me a Cfer.
I was so Pissed. I told them what I thought of it.
One was heavy the other had a huge nose,
So I refered to them as big butt and big nose,
They got the Point. It was at Georgrtown, a teaching hospital.
They told my Doctor who was thier Prof. He laughed his butt off.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

He said it was a Good Lesson for Them.....
