everyone in my family smokes

Eh I gotta agree at 25yo you have a choice not to live at home if the smoking bothers you that much. I moved out at 22 (18 if you count my years at college). Sure it's sometimes difficult dealing with CF and supporting yourself, but nobody said that life is easy, CF or otherwise. The bottom line is that it's their house and their bodies, and I think they are showing a modicum of respect by smoking outside. You need to decide how you truly feel and act accordingly, even if that means biting the bullet and moving out.

OK, I said it, go ahead and flame.

Well it seems my blunt kiwi style has caused offence....again, sorry about that, we tend to shoot from the hip over here and share opinions, be they in line with everybody else or even the opposite.

I'm just big on two things - live and let live and don't sweat the small stuff.

Our lungs are so poked anyway (technical medical term that one ) i don't really think a bit of second hand smoke drifting in from outside is going to change the course of our disease enough to warrant the stress. The stress however WILL effect your health, so if i was in the TA's position, i'd either move out, or chill out.

Glad a couple of people agreed with me though, i would never dream of expecting anybody to change what makes them happy, to make me happy, even if for he life of me i can't understand why something like smoking would make them happy, but it does, and that's their perogative. I dunno but that seems really really selfish to me to expect much more than them smoking outside, which they already do.

Sorry to be so blunt, i'm used to other message boards over here where this style of posting is quite normal.

KrazyKat,
I was perhaps a bit too sensitive to the tone of your first post. I'm open to all opinions and agree very much with your last point, basically, live and let live, each to their own. Really, I am worried about my dad's health, and, honestly, selfishly pissed off that they'd piss away healthy lungs. But you're right- not my choice.
Looks like I have some moving out to do!
With slightly stung pride I might just add in here that I don't live in the US, where I live almost everyone my age still lives at home until their professional careers takes hold, it's just the way...I'm not the only clinger!
Anyway, interesting thread. Sorry it got so touchy.

Hey no need to apologise i was very blunt and sometimes i need to pull my head in a bit and use my words more cautiously, i genuinely didn't mean to cause offence but i did, and that's not cool, so my bad!

Yeah over here living with your parents is becoming more and more common too and to quite an advanced age, simply because it's too darned expensive for our youth to study/work and also be able to afford their own place. It's just practical and there's nothing wrong with it, but in your case, there may be healthier options since all your family smoke.

Interestingly, i note from your footer that you have scoliosis, my sister was recently diagnosed with this and i know others who have both CF and Scoliosis in their family - i wonder if there is some sort of link between the two?

My son had an 8 hour spine surgery to correct his kyphosis, which is similar. He was actually dx with CF during pre-surgery testing. At the time, I was told there was no connection between the CF and the kyphosis, but I've always felt there really might be. I've met a few people on here who have both. Interesting, yes.

I completely disagree with the substance of Kat's post (I could really care less about the tone).

I grew up with my Dad smoking. I've gotten into his car and been choking from the lingering smoke, even after he finally only smoked outside. If you think the smoking effects just the smoker, you are completely wrong.

I was a bit sick this summer, when my dad was diagnosed with bladder cancer (leading cause: smoking). During pre-op testing they found he had multiple heart attacks and needed a triple bypass (cause: smoking). I got so much sicker being worried about him, running back and forth to and from the hospital, worried about the effect on my mom. He is still not fully recovered and I think his lungs went downhill a lot from the two operations (lungs were already effected from smoking). I worry if he's now carrying some funky bacteria in his lungs that I'm going to catch, and I worry that he's going to catch some funky bacteria from my lungs.

I know how hard it must be sometimes for my parents/husband to watch me sick, travel to and from the hospital for me, and see me on my bad days. I would never willingly make myself sick and put my loved ones through that.

My own dodgy lungs or not, I feel it is selfish.

You have the right to feel annoyed and pissed. Since they're not willing to talk I suggest locking them out next time they go out for a smoke. This would work better in the winter, I think.
