I think its something that bugs us all to some extent, it used to annoy me something awful but realised that they need to decide to stop smoking for themselves, not because I guilted them into it so I try not to dwell on it to much, I know there not doing it to spite me.

I feel the same way. Nearly 90% of my family smokes. My dad and I are the exceptions. I have become so angry with it, knowing the health of my lungs are deteriorating, that I asked my mom if she would ever consider quitting. She told me "no" so I asked, what if I only needed one lung and if you stopped today you could give it to me. She walked away. I don't understand why they continue smoking knowing that they are taking it for granted. I can't hold it against them but it still angers me.

Whether or not you have the right to feel annoyed/angry is a tough question, for quite a few reasons. I'm too lazy to write an essay, so I digress.

I'm going to buck the trend and say that at 25, you COULD be out living on your own or with non smokers, you are lucky enough to still be able to live with your family, so i think you should be grateful.

If people want to smoke that's their business and nobody else's, why should everybody give up just because you have dodgy lungs?

They are good enough to smoke outside (they don't have to), so i think you should just keep yourself away from it as best you can and leave them to it.

When did being sick make people become so totally self absorbed and unable to care about anybody else? This attitude so many of you have about smokers really annoys me. It's their body, they can do with it what they choose. As can we.

I know it's not rational, but I despise the act of smoking, and I choose not to be around anyone that smokes. Honestly it bothers me so much that I can't even be friends with someone who smokes. I know that I'm really lucky/sheltered to have grown up in a very anti-smoking family, I'm sure my feelings on the subject would be different if I grew up with it. My sister tried it a couple of times when she was a teenager and I got really really angry about it. It just infuriates me when someone does that to a perfectly good pair of lungs.

Like I said, I know my hatred for it is not really reasonable, but it's kind of my soapbox issue, so too bad! You have every right to be annoyed by it. That doesn't mean that they are going to change, but you are certainly entitled to your feelings on the subject, and I would feel the same way.

I have to respectfully disagree with this. One reason that smoking bothers me so much is that it very rarely only affects the actual smoker. Second hand smoke is a huge problem, and now they are finding out that even third hand smoke can be harmful (which I believe, since I gag/choke if I am around people that have smoke on their clothes).

Every time I am exposed to second or third hand smoke, that means that their choice is negatively affecting me, and that's why it bothers me so much. If someone wants to harm themselves, that's fine with me- their choice. But I personally don't think it's ok for them to make that choice for everyone around them.
