Hey Everyone! My name is Erin w/cf and I am 18 (almost 19) years old. I just finished my first year of college in Iowa! To tell my story in the short version, I am a runner. I was a 3 time state champion in Nebraska in the 1 mile and 2 mile. I am trying to keep active with my cystic fibrosis. I am very healthy and give my credit to the excercise I do everyday. I compete for a college track team also. What are you doing to stay active and keep excersising for healthy lungs with Cystic Fibrosis??</end quote>
impressive erin just out of interest what is your fev1

thanks for the replies! MYBOY--I also go to the UNMC in Omaha...I have since I was diagnosed at 3 months. I see Dr. Columbo. They love hearing about how active I stay. In high school I did band (flute), choir, volleyball, and basketball. Now in college I do Cross Country, indoor & outdoor track, and also as many intramurals as I can (bball, vball, dodgeball, etc.)! My parents were runners when they were younger, so they pushed for me to stay active and it has helped my health. I never really was as active with my CF though and promoting it until a few years ago when I did a podcast with Jerry Cahill. Everyone should check those out at www.jerrycahill.com They are pretty cool!!

Erin,

I too am curious what you FEV1 is? I must admit I am a little lazy now, but I use to run 2-3 miles/5 days a week. At that time my FEV1 was 78%. I was 23 at that time.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I do weight lifting/bodybuilding 5-6 days a week for about 1-1 1/2 hrs each time. So far I have competed in 2 natural bodybuilding shows and am contemplating doing another one in November in New York. It has helped me tremendously from where I was. In Nov 2002 I was to go to be evaluated for a lung transplant to find out things were worse than they seemed, my FEV1 was down to 23% and they told me that even if they had the lungs there right now they wouldn't operate beause I was too underweight, I believe I was around 95 lbs then and I'm 5'4" tall. They wanted to give me a G tube and I declined the offer and told them "I'll do it the old fashined way thank you". I now fluctuate between 135 and 140 when I'm well with only ~8% bodyfat. If I can put on a few more lbs especially on my legs by Nov. show then I'll really consider it. Anyway weight lifting rocks and is a great stress reliever!
