Wow Jenny, thanks so much for all the info! I always suspected having CF would make it more difficult to adopt children from this country, but I seriously had no idea that having CF would make it impossible to adopt from other countries - I always assumed that, because there are so many children that grow up in orphanages, a loving family with a person who might get sick is better than growing up in a orphanage, so it would be no problem. I guess that just shows my ignorance & lack of research on it. That's kind-of depressing to hear.

It sounds like you will make a wonderful foster parent, and I really admire all the research, thought, and seriousness you have put into it. Not matter what happens, it is a wonderful, selfless thing to do for a child, and I really do hope that you end up being able to adopt! It sounds like any child would be blessed to have you as a parent.

Hi Kristen-

It isn't impossible to adopt internationally. I adopted an infant from Guatemala. My son is now going to be 3year old - YIKES!!! I know that Guatemala is now "closed" for the time being, but there are other countries where you can adopt from.

Your best bet is to call an agency and talk to someone there. Qualifications are always changing and diffent countries are always becoming available to adopt from (and becoming "unavailable" as well!) Good luck and best wishes!

Was just reading this thread, and I have got to say that I admire those of you willing to be foster parents! My pastor and his wife are foster parents, and this is something I'd like to pass on to you all...

My pastor always said that Mose's mother only had him for 2 years (if you remember the story, his mom became his wet nurse for the pharoh's daughter for two years)--and look what he became. What you are doing, no matter how short the time, will still have a positive impact on the child's life.

The fact that you are willing to invest your heart, knowing that it may be broken,(if the birth parent fights is to me, the ultilmate act of love and compassion. God bless you.

I also have to smile at how this thread got off-track--and I think it is so great to see a nice discussion w/o any complications.

Hi Kristen,

Not all countries flag out people with CF but many do. I'm sorry if I wrote that out wrong. I meant to say that many do...

Guatemala is the country that my husband and I were strongly considering if we were to pursue an international adoption. They have/had one of the easiest adoption processes with the least cost and lesser involvement. Now, they are closed for who knows how long...Their adoption program agreement with the United States was suppose to be reinstated this past spring still nothing...It was closed due to Guatemala adopting out 'sick' babies to adoptive parents WITHOUT notifying anyone of the baby's issues. Lots of new parents were learning that their child had ongoing medical issues such as heart complications which required surgery and ongoing care...

Russia is one of the TOP 5 international adoption countries. They ARE NOT CF-friendly. However, their whole process is VERY COSTLY ($50,000), and you must live there for 4-6 weeks (I believe) BEFORE the adoption is finalized. Many can't take that much time off work.

Anyway, the countries that ARE NOT CF-friendly are also the lesser common ones so it's not too bad.

If you or anyone you know are looking for a CLOSED ADOPTION, than I would recommend an international adoption. Like I stated, the United States 'strongly recommends' open adoptions so you also are almost always involved with the birth parents to a certain degree unless they terminate their rights and voluntarily leave the picture. Some people can't handle that.

Anyway, Jake and I should have our child/children for the holidays. It should be a lot of fun!!! We are looking for 1 or 2 boys (siblings). I'm sure the call for siblings will come first so we'll see. Most fost/adopt parents only consider a single child so we MIGHT go from no children to 2 overnight!!! The system is flooded with older children, special needs children, and sibling groups.
