Flu shot

Hi Marjolein, Anna's transplant team recommends getting the flu shot. She got her shot last year in late Oct when we returned for her first follow-up after being released to go back home.

Right now she is having some rejection and because she was just slammed with IV steroids they want to wait until next month for her to get her flu shot. But they still want her to have it. They said something about (roughly translated) since her immune system was just "shot" that if she got the shot now there would be no memory for the flu later on and it would just be a waste. At least that is what I got out of the conversation.

Marjoein,

My doctor has stressed the importance of the flu shot every year. So I already got mine. My doc also suggests the Pneumonia vaccine every 5 years.

Liza,

Keep us updated on Anna, I hope she is doing better.

Thanks,

Thanks everyone for their replies

I was just wondering what everyone doc thought.

I have gotten mine every year. It's just that they were not really sure what it would do now. As my body is not really fighting the EBV for instance. So we are wondering if it will make antibodies for this flu shot.

But, we'll see. I have never had the flu, luckily.
And am thinking it will be the same this year.

Hope that will be the case for everyone <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi Margaret, Thanks for asking about Anna. She had A4 rejection. Scared the crap out of us. Anna had to ask them what the heck happened to 1-3? It came on so quickly with no symptoms of resp. distress, shortness of breath, nothing. She is doing much better now. She got released from Stanford and we were able to return to NE. She's back at school and feeling lots better. Her x-ray just a week after getting back to Stanford (after the three days of giant doses of solumedrol were done) were remarkable. They looked 50% better already. She'll return for a repeat bronch Thanksgiving week to be sure it's all gone.

Thanks again for asking!
