Gargling w/ Salt

My daughter who is only 4 1/2 with CF uses the hypertonic saline with a mask attachment which i believe helps her sinuses. Personally, I think gargling with salt water is great when you have a sore throat, it seems to soothe it. I have gargled with salt water when I've had strep throat and it eases the pain in my throat.

What is the mixture of salt to water, and what kind of salt? Also what do you rinse your nose with Risa? I need to do this I have so much gunk down (and up) there.

I am glad to hear that others do this.

I use Sterile Saline for irrigation purposes and I buy this at Walgreens. I need a prescription for this. Some people say it is easy to make but for me it is easy to take it from the bottle and it only cost me five dollars for six bottles. I get 1000 ml bottles.

I use a syringe without a needle to irrigate my sinuses. I tilt my head back and fill up each nostril five ml syringe and squirt it up there several times. All the solution comes out and whatever remainder is there, I open up my osteum by pulling my cheek back and blowing out. It is a sort of a reverse way of blowing your nose but you can get out much more stuff this way because you are opening it up and exhaling more air out of your nose.

Then I gargle with a separate cup either with the same sterile saline or I use any kind of salt. I never measure but enough salt and enough water for a good mixture.

be careful when tilting the head back and gargling. Make sure you tighten up your butt muscles along with your tummy too for a good stretch back if you need to gargle that far back. I hope you can do this without too much discomfort.

I hope it helps you<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Roshelle

I have been gargling with warm salt water for as long as I can remember. My grandparents raised me and I just thought it was an old wives tale they knew of. I firmly believe it works though. I have done it at the first sign of a sore throat and had it be gone the next morning. Jordan hates to gargle anything-he has a very sensitive gag reflex, but when I nag enough and he finally gives in, he says it helps him.

I think it could not hurt to do this every single day. Some ENT's site say it can hurt your throat but they are trying to sell you this irrigation machine and that you can also use in your throat. I see no difference. keep it simple

I think I might use 1/4 teaspoon of salt to a small cup of water but I do not measure.

I cannot believe the difference in mucus production to color and consistency. The reduction for me is incredible.
