Gargling w/ Salt

Well I have a few questions about this process, like is 'irrigation' just snorting salt water up your nostrils and blowing it out? I have read your description and I get the tilting head part but the rest is a mystery...How many ml do you use in total, and once the saline is up there what do you do? (ok sorry here comes the gross part) Do you just squirt it in and blow it out into tissues, let it trickle out your nostils or do you use some suction in your throat to get it to come out your mouth? Do you pinch your nose and shake your head around until you get the upside-down-in-swimming-pool feeling (lol)? Do you use a normal needleless syringe or a special goodie to get it right up there?
Then how long do you gargle afterwards...30 seconds?
(Yay, Risa, great topic: thats why I like coming to this forum!)

I use the hypertonic saline and it's done WONDERS. However my brother started it and it was too rough for him, it seemed to tear his throat up.

As for Gargling, I just want to quickly warn everyone that for SINGERS, gargling water can be bad for the vocal cords if excessively used (so I'm told). I tried it when I was in a show years ago because my voice was getting strained and it tore my throat to pieces, my voice instructor told me to gargle Sprite instead (which, obviously doesn't help when it comes to CF). Just another corner to throw into the ring.

When I Irrigate or Gargle, I use the same STerile Saline from the Pharmacy. I buy this and it comes sealed in a 1000 ml bottle.

I also buy syringes. I remove the needle portion and dispose of the syringe after each day.

I fill up the Five ml syringe with the sterile saline and tilt my head back and fill up the other nostril. After I get in about 10 ml in each side, I drain it all into the sink. Whatever saline is left in my sinuses comes out and blow out the rest.

I do this two to three times. Then I gargle with the same solution but of course use a new cup. I want to avoid any contamination from my nose to my mouth.

I do not move around. I just tilt my head back and go foward and let it drain out. Sometimes I would sniff in the remainder of the saline but I no longer do that.

Sometimes I massage the area later on in the day to bring energy into the sinuses. It helps if there is any infection. Stimulating the area is good. We have many acupressure points around the sinuses.

Some people tilt their heads to the side but I have not noticed a difference trying this. If there is mucus in their, it will move and eventually work its way out.

I found that irrigating alone is not enough for me. If the mucus is thick it will not move as fast as I would like it to. Gargling helps to bring out any additional mucus that is lodged in the back of the sinuses where it meets the throat. This is just my observation. I look forward to hearing from the ENT on here.

I also would like to know how safe it is to use saline in the ears if someone has an ear infection.

I did read that gargling with salt water can irritate the throat. It would make sense if you use too much salt.

I like using the sterile saline. You can hardly taste the salt and it has not bothered my throat. Ask me this question in a few months and I will let you know. I just started gargling every day a few weeks ago.
