That would be the <i>equivalent</i> of forced sterilization for people who are deemed "not good enough" to be parents by the government. And what would happen if they did get pregnant? Forced abortion? Take the child away the day it is born based on a form? Can you imagine the waiting list to get government approval to be parents?!?

Nobody is the "perfect parent" and few even come close, but most people seem to turn out okay <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> . And, as was said, what happens if your circumstances change when the child is 6 (divorce, job loss, health issues, etc.)? Do they come and take your child(ren) away and give her to a "better" family? It's a nice thought, in theory, but in practical application, it's not ethical or practical, IMO.

Pete, I've been saying the same thing for years and years. If you need a license to drive a car (which also requires responsibility), you should have to get a license for becoming a parent. It would dramatically cut down abuse of the welfare system, and many other issues. Except I'll go so far as to add an extra criteria; you have to take a general common sense test before you can get a parenting license!!

Well, that would work out just fine. We did that before in Nazi Germany and in some parts of the US (for IQ of women).

I wouldn't go so far as to say genetics and IQ would need to be taken into consideration. Even though I am against CFers having kids personally (unless IVF or adoption are involved), I still believe that is a personal choice and would not descriminate against it.

With IQ, I don't believe it matters. Having all the book sense in the world does nothing for you if you don't have common sense. I believe that to be more important than a college degree (I know a lot of people in college, some of which are friends, who could recite the periodic table backwards and forwards and yet haven't changed the oil in their cars since they bought it, and lend their cell phones out to any Joe who askes, who later steals it...if you couldn't tell, those were specific experiences...).

I don't support the government regulating these types of things because lets face it, they'd screw it up.

However, before anyone has a child/chooses to be a parent these issues should be considered. It is irresposible to bring a child into an unstable situation whether it be financial, emotional, etc. Granted all of these things can, and do, change over time but decisions should be made in the here and now.
