Thanks for the info Jenny. I'm not sure if our insurance will cover any of it at the moment. The IVF clinic that I called gave me a quote on all of the testing and IVF/PGD process. It is quite expensive. I know that the consultation fee of $300 does include an initial ultrasound. Both of our prescreen testing alone is going to cost about $1600. The really disturbing part of it all is that our insurance company will cover the cost of terminating a pregnancy but not an IVF procedure that would avoid termination. Did you have to petition your insurance company for any coverage?

Thanks and good luck to you!

No problem.

I don't know if I'd go 100% by your clinic's quote, though, until you go for your first appointment. My clinic gave me a quote too, but thankfully, they were off. I actually had more covered by insurance than originally thought (which is a RARE EVENT).

As far a petitioning...I haven't had to file any petitions for coverage of any testing because they paid all of them (so far). However, that doesn't mean that I won't possibly try to get at least some coverage with the IUI or IVF (if I decided to go with that route in the end). IVF for us would be too much upfront. I have three different quotes from three different sources on my clinic. The clinic said $6,500. Two other patients told me $7,500 and $12,000. It's a BIG difference...

I have to admit...I joined an IVF forum and some countries have much better benefits to unfertile couples. Some countries allow their unfertile couples 3 IVF procedures covered 100%! Isn't that enough to turn your stomach!!! It turns mine. Europe and parts of Asia are more than gracious in regards to IVF coverage.

I see your point about abortion vs. IVF coverage. Honestly, I think it's GREAT that you want to do IVF to AVOID CF. I wish my Mom would have done that. My parents didn't know I'd have CF, but they knew the odds when they had my sister (who also ended up with CF). That was 23 years ago, though...

I think it's wonderful that you want to AVOID CF. I applaud you for your effort; however, I don't think it's fair that you have to pay such a high price to GIVE your future son/daughter a BETTER shot at life. It's not fair that you or anyone else has to pay such ridiculous fees. As far as I'm concerned (without opening my mouth too wide 'cause it gets me in trouble), it would cost the insurance companies LESS to pay for the IVF than to PAY for all the CF child's medications, hospitalizations, and so on. That's all I will say on that...

I would file a petition so that you can at least get some of the fees from the IVF covered. You shouldn't have to pay any of it in the first place.

Thanks for your kind words and support, Jenny. It is a frustrating and desperate situation to be in. I think maybe we should move to Europe or Asia! That would be wonderful if the fees that we were quoted were off, I might try to "shop" around a little more. This clinic quoted us about $12000 for IVF and then another $4000-$5000 for the PGD. OUCH!
