Going in for a tune-up and first PICC Line

Renee, has your daughter been rechecked for the CFRD since she regained most of her FEV1? Being so ill, it would effect her results. Do you have the diagram that Dr. Moran used to explain?

As far as PICCs go...

Jeremy HATES IVs. Heck, he hates having blood drawn. He hates having a PICC placed (it does hurt some) and they use a large gauge needle. He doesn't like having the PICC line in (it kind of freaks him out a little).

However, he greatly prefers the PICC to an IV. It allows you to be more independent, and it's a heck of a lot less hassle than a regular IV.

When he had a PICC three years ago, it was the stitch-in kind. This time it was a Statlock, no stitches required. However, it needed to be changed weekly with the dressing change.

Her arm is going to be sore for a day or so. Hot packs work wonders - I strongly recommend using them for the first 48.

Since I'm sure she'll be on Tobra, keep checking on her for ringing in the ears.

Good luck!

Renee,

I am sorry that she is having this going on. Kayla had a PICC line last May, and did great with it. She hates IVs, and they are so difficult to get in her because she is so scared of them. With the PICC, they had given her Versed (?spelling) prior to placing it in, and she didn't even flinch. My husband and I were in the room with her while it was done and I was amazed at the difference of getting that and the normal IV.

And the PICC never bothered her while it was in place. The worst part of it was when we had to change the connectors and the STICKY tape had to be removed from her arm. It really gets sore under that tape, and she will tell you that the tape was the worst part of the whole thing! They did not use stitches at all, and I am glad they didn't. The tape, as bad as it is when it is removed, did the trick.

They placed her PICC in her left arm, and she was able to basically do everything she wanted, minus bike riding, trampoline and swimming. She went to school with it once we had her meds spaced out to allow her to go to school late and be picked up early without having to worry about running antibiotics at school.

I was scared to death to do IVs at home! But I caught on very quickly. It helps that my sister is a RN at the Children's Hospital that we attend so I had someone to call with questions, but the home health care team will be there for you when you need help also.

Both you and her are going to do great!!

Hi Renee,

My son (9 yr.old) had two picc lines so far and didn't have a problem. Like others said we used emela for the IV and he was sedated for the PICC and doesn't even remember. They wapped it good, no stitches. We came home and did IV's at home. I was nervous at first, but I practiced in the hospital with a nurse and then the home nurses had me do it too. Not a big deal. I was a pro by the time he was done. Good luck to you and your daughter.

I agree regarding the TAPE. I think they should be sedated for the picc line, less traumatic. The tape was probably the worst experience for my son...it hurts heaps getting it off, and has to be changed weekly

We're home... have been for a few days, actually but just found time to sit down at the computer. The PICC line went very well. They have a PICC Team who do just PICC lines and are very good at it. It wasn't nearly as tramatic as I anticipated. Kaitlyn and I were under a sterile "tent" while they were doing it and she was atcually giggling through it.

I have to say I have been just a tad overwhelmed with the home IV's. Not that it's hard to do, but time consuming. I had to go back to work as soon as we got home so it's been a challenge. I can't wait for the first time I get to sleep for 8 straight hours (next Thursday)... But it's going well.

Thanks again for all your help!
