Good news about Glutathione

Diane, I think it's great that you are posting this even though it was a very small study. The idea was to show that Glutathione is worth investigating. And glutathione has shown promise for a long time. And your experience is the same as mine is with NAC, a precursor to glutathione.

If anyone is interested you can look at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation site, and you will see that inhaled glutathione, and oral NAC studies are both well along in the testing phases. And you will probably hear a major announcement concerning the value of both. More importantly, they will have tested various dosages.

I have had excellent results using NAC which is the precursor to glutathione. It was always thought that oral glutathione wasn't that accessible to the body. So that instead that it might be better to take NAC instead. NAC helps the body make glutathione so that it can be used it readily. But if people have great results with oral glutathione, there has to be value in this.

When I had a setback a few years ago, my normal preventative routine wasn't enough and I couldn't get out of a bad exercabation cycle. (my house filled with smoke from a large neighbothood fire.) I added hypertonic saline, tumeric capsules, and NAC. Tumeric (Curcumin) is also being studied by the CFF. And expect an announcement about this also.

Anyway, the infections just stopped dead. And what is really amazing is the last few cultures are not even picking up the usual pseudomonas or staph.

None of these things are miracle cures. And I do do a lot of other things to maintain my health. Once in a while I get occasional exacerbation that usually does not require antibiotics -- mostly inflammation due to certain triggers.

I cannot say for certain how much NAC is responsible for my improvement. But it seems consistant with results others have reported using NAC or Glutathione. So I would say for those people whose doctors are closed to the idea, if you wait a bit longer, it will probably be an accepted treatment very soon.

Thanks to everyone for all the information, it is great that everyone is willing to share their experiences. At the moment I am getting infection after infection and am spending months in hospital as the antibiotics are taking longer and longer to kick in. I am now being assessed for transplant. Nightwriter would you mind letting me know what NAC and tumeric product and dose you take? Cheers again

Diane,
iHerbs offers several 500mg reduced Glutathione products by different manufacturers (NOW, Jarrow, and Healthy Origins). I would be interested to know which one you use, and which one was used in that recent medical trial. Maybe it's not crucial to have the exact same kind if it is produced at pharmaceutical grade? The methods section for the article abstract you posted is not available to look at without purchasing the entire article online (for $30).

Thanks,
Danny

Hi Jersey,

I noticed that you are new here and it seems like from England -- only my favorite place! This site will be so useful to you. I don't know if you live in the States or are still in the U.K., so I don't know whether my vitamin source will be of use to you. I buy all my vitamins from discount suppliers as long as the standard is high. Sometimes from the Vitamin Shoppe, but usually from Vitacost.com. I also always google to see if there are promotional codes for any company because you can get another 5- 8% off.

These 2 supplements are from Vitacost's own line NSI.

1) Tumeric Extraact with Bioperine 900mgs one capsule 2 times a day.
2) N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) 600mgs 3 times a day

I take the Tumeric with lunch and dinner. And the NAC with each meal.

You didn't ask, but I wanted to mention that even though I don't know what the particulars of your case is -- I was in that cyclical boat of sick and sick and sick. My FEV1 had gone down as low as 32% and had become resistant to almost all meds. I have written about my case on many threads. Basically it was that a new doctor started to treat the asthma component of CF, something that most doctors ignore or refuse to believe is a major contributor to constant exacerabtions. It is based on her theory that there are triggers that cause inflammation in the lungs, the airways swell, and trap the mucus with the bacteria inside the airways. You start to get an exacerbation where the inflammation needs to be treated BEFORE it turns into infection. The airways then can open, and the mucus can get out before it causes serious problems.

I can direct you to some posts that I have written if that is your cup of tea .
