hand sanitizer question

As far as it helping or not helping in hot bringing home bugs...(wow, poorly constructed sentence - sorry)

I am a teacher. Two years ago, when my CF daughter was one, I invested heavily in sanitizer and made it available for my kids at school to use. We use it before breakfast (school serves breakfast to everyone), and before snack since we don't use the bathroom as a group at those times. It's also by the Kleenx boxes and if you use one, you automatically use the other. Kids will also get a squirt from me if someone at their table is coming down with something.

I find that I am healthier than I used to be. Still get the back to school cold and had a mild flu-like bug this year, but its better. My daughter gets only the mild stuff that every kid gets, too. AND, attendance in m y classroom is outstanding!!!! 7 kids who have not missed a day of school all year, which blows the school average out of the water!!!!!!

I think it helps.

Just my 2 cents.

Tami- I wish ALL teachers were like you! But, my kids' teachers have clearly followed the same kind of hygiene practices as you have, and even if it hasn't always helped (some yrs the kids have caught lots of stuff, other yrs we've been much healthier) it certainly helps promote good habits that will hopefully 'stick', you know?

I just CRINGE when I see kids coughing into their hands, btw. 'But I coverrrrrred my mouthhhhhh' they will say... 'And now you will slime everything you touch with those hands, especially when you touch other people' I think- since really, what kid washes with each cough? Maybe, MAYBE, when they blow their noses if you give them the 'eye'! Coughing into their elbow/whatever is such an important thing to teach kids I think to help in keeping germs contained!

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>...can't a 6 year old keep their hands out of their mouth? (i'm not being sarcastic i actually don't know when children stop putting their hands in their mouth, or much else about children for that matter lol) seems weird to me </end quote></div>

Just to answer the question - it depends on the kid. My 7yo still sucks her fingers. We've been trying to get her to stop for three years. She's much better but still does it when she's nervous or bored. I know she'll stop when the other kids start teasing but until then... I also have a friend who's 8yo was even worse and she just recently stopped.

On the other hand, I don't think putting your hands in your mouth after using hand sanitizer would be enough for alcohol poisening. You'd actually have to drink it. And I think definitely a 6yo is wise enough not to drink the stuff.
