Have you ever picked up a bug in the hospital?

Just figure out that sick people come into the hospital, spread their germs, have visitors/nurse/doctors that touch them, touch door handles, pens, anything, and you have an atmosphere to spread germs. I believe everyone who enters a hosspital room should wash their hands or at least use the sanitizer on the wall. This should include visitors--and they certainly should do it before they leave. I usually shudder when I see small children in the hopital--children who put their hands on everything, and then in their mouths. Most of the nurses I know do not even wear their nurse's shoes home....

DS spent the first 6 weeks of life in the NICU recovering from Meconium Illeus surgery. He kept getting infections. When he was finally released from the hospital he had a boogery nose and would cough so hard he'd vomit up his formula. At his two month appointment, his CF doctor when he heard the cough said "he has cf, they cough, that's what they do." A month later he had an appointment with his primary CF doctor in the City -- he had bronchitis. Cultured something called enterbactor cholae -- a bug commonly found in NICU's from fecal matter, improper hand washing.

Also have noticed since we no longer go to the local cf clinic with the community waiting room, staff who don't wash hands... DS hasn't cultured pseudo since.

My daughter Kelly found out she had cf two mths after she was born. We had a first stay in the hospital shortly after we found out to get her started on meds. She was only supposed to be in the hospital for a couple of days and it ended up three weeks. She got the flu along with RSV. I hate when she has to go to the hosiptal. I am always afraid we will end up there longer then 14 days.

I use to not be so worried about being in the hospital until I went to this site and learned that you can come home with a new bug in your system, the only thing Im afraid of getting is B. Cepacia and if I ever have to go into the hospital I think I would be a germ freak for sure and would make sure EVERYONE washed their hands especially docs and nurses.
