I don't know if it is different for adults but my child's doctors have said the sweat test is the gold standard and is diagnositic.
I would certainly not consider it worthless.
Genetic testing is also a significant aspect of cf testing however it too is not 100% so both tests along with a medical history is important for a diagnosis.
I think people are misidentifing the genetic test.
Refering to it as a "panel" is only referring to a pre-determined panel of certain mutations to be tested.
What you want to request, should the panel be negative, is a full gene sequence with deletion and duplication testing.
There are several labs that will be able to perform this test.
