my small airways are crap...somewhere in the 20% range. They do the full PFT's to measure them I believe. Not sure really. I just know last time I was in the hospital, for my discharge PFT's, he showed me the papers and how much air was trapped in my lungs from my small airways being shoot. Not a pretty sight! But he told me if you work to get them back up it will increase your O2 sats and also your FEV1.

I don't know quite how it works either... except that small airways always go first. And I also don't know how they measure it, but the FEF 25%-50% is your small airways.</end quote></div>

Small airways are a much more sensitive indicator of health for those who have mild CF (objectively measured by FEV1 of greater than 70%).

You notice small changes of infection/damage in small airways. once the small airways have gone, larger airways go after.

so for someone like Em, just like she said, a more sensitive measure of her health is her small airways. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Very mild as I am 37 with no lung damage yet. My PFT's are 82% due to asthma (and I had a baby). Now that I use albuterol, vest and HTS I feel pretty good and this is the best winter I have had in years. I can take Amelia for walks in the cold and not get a sore throat or other respiratory infection. This is the first time in about 15 years that I can withstand temps below 40 degrees for hour long walks and not get sick.
