has anyone thought of the issue that by using chemicals & boiling to sterilize, that we're breaking down the plastic of the neb itself then inhaling from them? Just a thought. I do sterilze my sons nebs once daily.

Yes, chemicals are pretty much a definite no. By boiling you could potentially release tolulene or benzine (both are carcinogenic) depending on the type of plastic used (PET or PETE).

My CF clinic routinely questioned patients as to how they were cleaning/disinfecting their neb cups and found that those who were sterilizing remained fairly healthy while those only rinsing had more infections.

One of my doctors suggested some soap and water and then putting them on my window sill in the sun light. (Since UV rays sterilize). So I have a special area so that after my nebs I can wash them with soapy water and then set them out. I don't neb twice a day unless I'm sick, but I haven't had any issues since starting to clean them this way. To each his own, I say. If boiling them has worked for you and your doc suggests it..then more power to you!

Edited to add:

When my hubby is taking care of cleaning them he uses boiling water.

Oh, I wanted to add that I sterilize mine using a baby bottle sterilizer. I have about 8 pari cups, so I do them all in a couple of batches every few days. The sterilizing part does not take very long, washing them takes way more time.
