Isolation precautions

My hospital is pretty good about precautions. I am always on isolation and when anyone comes in to see me they gown up and use gloves. I make my family and friends gown up too in the beginning and then I let them slack off come the end of my stay. Most of the DRs that come in to see me gown up and all the nurses and RT's do. The RT's are only allowed one CF patient a day. So if there are 4 of us in then we each get a different RT. Sometimes though there are more CFers than RT's so then they have to double up. When any of the nurses or RT's have colds they wear masks which I like. Whenever I leave my room I have to gown up. The only thing that stinks is every now and then they will run out of gown supply outside my room.

I wanted to add that I also get a private room and they keep the CFers in seperate sections of the hospital on the same floor. Each floor is divided into little areas of 4 rooms so its one CFer per area. Plus none of us get the same nurses as the others. We also get our own scale, stethescope, and BP/pulse ox machine.

Here they don't use gowns OR gloves, at all. (just for a normal hospitalization) They might if you have cepacia, but I don't know. The only time I see anyone wearing a mask around me is if they have a cold, and I don't personally have to wear gown/mask/gloves if I go out of my room. CF patients do always get a private room though, which is nice. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

My Doc is very strict about everyone gowning up and wearing gloves when they enter my room. There is a big sign on my door that says reverse precausions. I have the right to make anyone put on a mask. My doc has yelled at staff for not following the precausions. All of this is for my protection.

We have two floors that cf patients go to. They do not allow any staff to care for more than one cf patient and they keep the cfers several rooms apart.

I am also always in a private room. I don't have any major bugs so my doc tries to do what he can to keep it that way when I am in the hospital.

At the hospital that I go to I'm not sure the exact rules but I'm put on contact isolation because I grow MRSA. Anytime I leave my room I have to wear a mask. Anyone that comes in to do an examination has to wear gloves and a gown. I'm not sure what other germs they put on contact. Even if they didn't make me I would still wear a mask outside of the room because I don't want to catch anything else. There are all kinds of nasty germs in a hospital. The number things in my book is to protect yourself from others germs.
