It doesn't matter

I see this as an issue that is great to have out in the open without nasty bickering at one another, mainly b/c it is a real issue. Nno need to supress a real issue, b/c everything should be able to be discussed in a rational manner - like this has been.

Whether someone is offended or not by the topic, doesn't mean people are not having to deal with this dilema or that it doesn't exist.

I see it from both sides, and it makes perfect sense that there are two sides to this.

There will always be people with CF
-that would abort a baby with CF
-that would not abort a baby with CF

There will always be people without CF
-that would abort a baby with CF
-that would not abort a baby with CF

This discussion brings out all sides and I think is very interesting to hear. I think it's great to discuss. These threads are bringing members out of the woodwork. That shows that it's a topic of substance that should be talked about. Deffinitely, where else can you talk about this with so many people. I would say this site has the largest group of people in one place, with the most amount of knowledge on the topic. What better place then this in order to hear both sides?

Abortion is right or wrong regardless of CF. I personally think aborting children is murder unless the mother's life is in danger. I have cf and am happy with the contributions I can bring to the world. I think cf, of all reasons, is a silly reason to abort. Other reasons, while I don't agree with them morally, are easier to understand though.

CFer here...I'm not offended. I don't think people are being selfish by aborting a CF baby (at least not in most cases). I never heard "I just don't want to deal with a CF kid," etc...it seems to be more that they don't want their child to suffer and have hardships of CF throughout their life.

Personally, I would never abort a CF baby, I disagree w/ those who choose to do so, but I don't take it personally. I don't think they are making a value judgment on the life of any CFers...I think they are just concerned about their child living with such a difficult disease.

I wasn't offended either. I did not think it was about CFers having "nothing to bring to the world other than suffering" I mean how many people do you know healthy or unhealthy really bring anything earth shattering to the world other than their chraming personalities we're not all Einsteins or Marylin Monroe

I thought it was more about would you knowingly continue with a pregnancy if your child would have CF. You have to keep in mind we're discussing people who do not exist. To personalise it into you and me and the other CFers we have known loved and lost..... totally changes the entire question.

Also, I'm not trying to pick on you for this because you are not the only one who does this but is a pet peeve of mine around here. The "This is a CF SUPPORT group, is it not?" comment... what looks like support to one person may not look like support to another. For many a place where they can come and discuss ANYTHING openly that has anything remotely to do with CF the good bad or ugly and unaccessorized, in either an- upbeat can do attitude or a - I see a red door and I want it painted black attitude is their idea of support. I find support here in simply chatting about nothing with people who know a little about my life and chat with me about Harry Potter or what not while I do my treatment

At any rate I am sorry you were offended..but no I didn't find the thread offensive.

actually, i was going to say the opposite. that people who choose not to abort are selfish. the reason being, that it seems easier to watch someone esle suffer than choose to suffer ourselves.

what i mean is, choosing not to abort would bring suffering of that horrible decision on the parents. or they could go through with the pregnancy free of the guilt of abortion, because the child had a miniscule chance of not suffering as much. THAT seems to be tinged with selfishness.

now, i'm not saying it is a wrong decision, just a selfish one.

and it should be clear, too, that the question applies for foreknowledge of cf, and does not imply that those who do have cf don't have anything to offer, just that most of us would choose not to have it.
