More Enzymes

Thanks for letting me know about the expiration date. Maybe they discovered during the fda approval process that they were staying stable for longer or did something to them to better stabilize them (we use Creon 12's here) ...since I know we were told the Creon 10's she started with expired much quicker than that. Or maybe her clinic just errs on the side of caution! In any case- thank you. I have been having my mom throw the stash away she keeps at her house for Emily quite often and it's good to know they 'keep' longer than I thought they did. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

eta> her stools are quite soft but she gets very gassy and/or gets stomachaches when we increase her calories to try and help her gain weight. Increasing fat has been kind of dicey lately- she's had some return of greasy stools and tummy aches there so we're back to a lot of enzyme experimentation. I'm starting to wonder if she might need some kind of antacid/PPI.

While I was growing up this was a huge issue. My enzymes and doses continued to change until I was about 16. I also topped out and switched enzymes a few times. They will probably tweak the dose until they find something that works for him. I am at the highest dose I can be on with UltraseMT 20.

HMW,

do you increase enzymes according to fat content of food? I personally will take 5 enzymes if I am having something like pizza for example b/c it is soo greasy vs if im having salads and fruits (which dont really need enzymes... well the fruit) then i'll take my 4. Like I said earlier if I have a lot of meat (I love homemade jerky for example) then I take 4 enzymes with a miralax cocktail...

I also if after a meal my stomach starts hurting, will take 1-3 enzymes again. That pretty much always helps upset stomachs for me. Sometimes I take an extra antacid too (tums or prevacid).

As for anatacid, I take prevacid (but its the solutab which kinda tastes gross sometimes) but I only take it for the reflux feeling, I havent noticed it affecting the effectiveness of my enzymes. I noticed though that I like the pills of prevacid better than the dissolving tabs, felt like they worked better.

I tend to judge enzymes according to the food I am eating. I dont see the harm in increasing Emily's enyzmes by one when you are trying to increase her calorie content... to me it would allow her to absorb more of the nutrition from the higher calorie foods and prevent the greasy stools and stinky farts.

Although thinking back, I had horrible gas until about 18... but nothing has changed but diet for a long time, and even now, when I am on an appetite stimulant and eating meals enough for 4 people, my gas isnt hardly ever as bad as it was pretty much constantly growing up.

And lastly, I guess I should double check the enzymes findings with my next doctor appt. around the 14 or 15 of this month... like I said, when I last heard about that, it was around 2006 or 2007 with my old ped doctor.

(Sorry my posts are sooo long lately all, I am feeling talkative :] )
