I haven't looked at the facts about pulmozyme in a while, but I do recall that they really don't have any info on effecacy for children under 5 or so. So I was under the impression that it is not recommended unless there are symptoms.
As for the hypertonic solution, we are not doing it yet, but I think we are going to push for it from the docs. I don't think you could go wrong on starting that as it is all natural. The whole issue with these kids is the lack of salt, so adding it to their bodies can only be beneficial. My understanding is that if the solution is difficult to handle, it can be diluted by simply adding sterile saline solution.
Blessings,
Missa

Our oldest is 9 and he didn't start Pulmozyme until he was about 5 and he doesn't do HS. He has no lung involvement at this point and hopefully it will stay that way. He was put on Pulmozyme b/c he has very mild lung disease and it will help to thin out the mucus.

Our youngest is 3 and is not on Pulmozyme or HS. His docs tell his that they will probably wait until he about 5. They may do it sooner if he has inflammation but he also has very mild lung disease. I was told that they do not like to start kids on it until they know that it will really help them b/c it is so expensive. I guess finding that our clinic mentioned was they didn't know really how effective it was for younger kids. Hope this help.

Our clinic has also stated that they do not start inhalation treatments if there is no symptomatic lung involvement until about the age of 5 years old... A little disappointing.

My Ellie started Pulmozyne at two months and Hypertonic at 6 months. Since she has started both she has been doing great. The treatments can be long but we do it when she's sleepy<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
