I would really suggest the IEP also. There was a person recently in Iowa, he has CF and was a senior in HS. When it was time to graduate they told him he had missed too much school (for being in the hospital) that he wasn't able to graduate. He had no IEP. Having that will prevent this situation from happening.

DS starts kindergarten next year and I'm already a nervous wreck. First of all the elementary schools in our city don't have a full time nurse. The main issue I have is with enzymes, the only med he'll have to start with. According to the school handbook, all meds are kept in a locked cabinet in the school office. I hear stories from other people about all the druggies who have to line up before lunch to get their meds -- mainly derogatory comments toward ADD/ADHD kids. So I'm worried DS will have to deal with some cranky office person or just decide he's missing out on something and skips his enzymes.

He's in preschool currently and they just give him his enzymes with snacks and meals, no biggy.

We also have a 504 Plan for both of my girls, and it states that they are to have snacks in the afternoon. They stop snacks at 2nd grade, so last year this was a huge situation for my 3rd grader. By the time I would pick her up from school, she was crabby and unbearable! Having a water bottle is also a big plus.

Hi, Conor will be starting second grade this year. We have had our ups and downs with the school with regard to CF care. We are fortunate in that we have a fantastic school nurse, she has gone out of her way to help Conor with everything.
I buy Boost and she keeps it in her office so when he goes down for his enzymes she gives him some. Remember to ask for seperate script for school meds. The meds you take to school need to be in the original containers. You will also need a spare neb cup and tubing ( we also keep a spare filter there ) The insurance companies sometimes have a fit about this but we got around it by having a new script filled.
Our school is on a health food kick which really makes it difficult for CF's so I went straight to the cafeteria manager asked about what I needed to make sure Conor had a good lunch ( high fat etc ) and he told me to get a script from the doc. and have it in the file. Now we get to pick and choose what Conor gets for lunch and they supply chocolate milk and yogurt for snack.
You may want to double check about the pm snack issue. Here in PA it is mandated as to how many hours a child can go without food during the school day so all kids have a pm snack. You also can get permission for a CF child to keep gatorade etc on or by the desk during school hours.
I was given a great panphlet by the social worker, CF for teachers and caregivers. This helped to educate the teacher as to what to expect.
