Health insurance (which is responsible for people's LIVES) should not be a for profit business. That's really what it comes down to. But in the US, as of right now... it is. And it's disgusting.</end quote>

That's the entire point of the movie Sicko. Nothing is wrong with paying something, in order to keep the system afloat and quality up, but definitely not a profit based system. My medicare takes out 100 bucks a month from my social security, and I can't even use it due to the inhaled medicine clause that reverts you back to medicare part B, which covers like 70% of the medications. Pulmozyme alone has a 2500-3000 dollar retail. If I were to pay the other 30% of that and a few others, I either wouldn't be able to do it, or nearly my entire paycheck would go to medications, essentially working full time plus overtime to cover just inhaled medications. Sorry, that system is broken.

What a great post! I live in the US and did not have health insurance until the age of 24 when I got married. My father was self-employed and part of that class of people too wealthy to qualify for "help". What a messed up system. There are a lot of people who have swallowed that "scare" pill that conservatives have labeled socialized medicine. FDR championed that cause during his administration and unfortunately ran out of time in making any lasting changes. He basically said that Americans should be free from the fear of financial ruin due to a disability or illness. WOW! Wish we had some politicians like that today.

Having the necessary medicines and treatment is a "right to life" issue in this country. It is amazing to me that people will fight for the rights of the unborn and turn away from the disabled children that are already here! Don't get me wrong, I am a pro-life person; however, there are many many issues with being pro-life. Protecting the lives that are already here and supporting moms who feel they can't have a baby because they won't have healthcare or are in such poverty due to the YOYO (your on your own) Bush Economy. Love the "brilliant" idea of a health savings account. If you don't spend it you get to keep it, yipppeee! Oh no, I had to spend all of mine in the first 5 minutes of opening my account on my #@$ $1500 PULMOZYME AND MY @#!$3000 TOBI. Too bad for me!!!!

My husband and I were very moved by the movie SICKO and actually I thought what if we did move to Canada or Europe or Norway and then we would not have to be burden with healthcare costs! What a changed that would be! WOW!

I wonder if people with CF statistically do better in the US or in those areas?? Anyone know????? In terms of overall health and mortality????

To not worry about the financial burden of healthcare, education, and daycare would be a wonderful thing!

I'm not sure about stats, that should be pretty easy to research through the CFF website I would think.

Don't you have to first become citizens of those countries before getting everything for free, and if so, I wonder what all is involved there & if there is a waiting period, etc.?

Also, to become a citizen, do you have to pass a physical? I would assume there are some guidelines in place to keep everyone from moving over there to get free health care?
