I might touch on a nerve here, but does a non-socialized health system not seem like its a bit....selfish? You know, you're out for yourselves - why pay taxes for someone who doesn't bother working etc, etc? </end quote></div>

I'm not sure what you mean here...Do you mean that we should happily pay for heallth care for healthy people that choose to not work & just sit at home because they want to?

as far as i know giggles, australias cf life expectancy is aout the same as the US. the UK is a bit lower. other places i have no idea.

lynda, i think the way most countries work is if you have skills you will be let in. otherwise if you have nothing to offer you will be turned down. i dont think physicals come into it unless you have a contagious disease. however, if you pay someone 5000 bucks to illegally come here on a rickety old boat you will automatically be let in no matter what and given everything on a silver platter! house, car, pension *sigh*

while i have many complaints about australias healthcare, i have heaps of praises too. its not all the same nationwide either. one state might be bad and another might be excellent. it depends which state government is in at the time because they are the ones who run the hospitals. the federal government just funds treatments.

Unless you don't make it to the mainland and get stuck on Nauru or Christmas Island.. but that's another story <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

I agree that the Australian system has good bits and bad bits. Which I guess is similar to most systems around the world.

At first I thought you were kidding about the rickety boat, but you're not, right??? Heck, we have an old bass boat, but I'm not sure it would make it<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

So, does the gov't give naturilized citizens a house, car and pension too?

That seems fair that if you have nothing to offer in the way of skills that they won't let you in. So, basically if you can see, walk & look pretty normal, then you're OK?
